View Full Version : Hatori confusion

It looks like a Hatori pipe is the one I'd like to get, but I'm confused as to which one. This will be for a Trex 600N, probably with a YS engine. I've read up on the forums and the 522 is brought up most often, followed by some other model numbers. Looking online, I don't see these models. The usual suspects (readyheli, grandRC, etc) only carry the following...
Hatori SB-50HP Jason Kraus Special O/S Hyper 50
Hatori SAB-50-3D Bobby Watts Special O/S Hyper and YS 50
I know the first would be for the OS only, but would the SAB 50 3D be the one I would want for a YS 50? The 522 seems to be the most popular, but why does nobody carry it?
Thanks

I believe that those models are specific to the US market only. Never seen them here in Japan.
It's probably the same muffler but some marketing man wants to get his cut.
For reference, here is the original #522 from Hatori's website

Or, if you are thinking of a TT RL53H then the #523 is custom designed for its power output.

Externally the same dimensions but I guess the baffles are modified.

From what I've read, it seems the 522 and the SAB-50-3D Bobby Watts Special are the same.

Does anybody know what the differences are, other than $20 more for the Jason Krause Special? I dinged my Align pipe during a crash awhile back and want to be ready in case I need to replace it.
Edit: For one thing, I see that the JK Special is a two-piece design whereas the BW Special is one piece. It seems to me that a two-piece design would add one more location for potential leakage.

Direct bolt on has its pros and cons.
Pros. It is fairly simple to install
Con's. If you crash and happen to hit the muffler, it breaks the crankcase of the motor
two piece design
Pro's Simple to bolt on, especially the FH two pieces.
If you crash and happen to hit on muffler side. Muffler pops off header and no damage to engine crankcase.
Con's You may have to replace O-rings or isolators periodically.

I could definitely see that coming in handy.:o My T-Rex 600N impacted the ground on the lower front left corner during my last crash. Lucky for me, the threads stripped out of the Align pipe rather than my engine being damaged.

From what I've read (hopefully I'm not just spreading BS, so read on at your own risk), the JK is a 2 chambered muffler whereas the BW and 522 are 3 chambered. The 2 chambered would make slightly less power and noise than the 3. The JK (2) is also specially tuned for the OS, but the BW can be used on others as well. Since the JK is tuned for the OS, I'm not sure it would make less power than the BW... it may very well be equal or better... hard to say.

The JK Hatori for the 50 is single baffle, where is the ridge is on the cannsiter is the baffle.

Also the JK muffler is a two piece muffler.
The BW muffler has two baffles notice the two ridges on the cannister.

It is a one piece muffler.
Since both mufflers are virtually the same volume. The difference is in the baffling. The BW has two baffles I would think so that it will work best on the YS engine. The YS engines are finicky about the back presssure from the muffler. So the BW probably works best with the YS Engine. The JK muffler will mount to the YS engine also, Since YS got smart and started making there exhaust mounting pattern the same as the OS 50.
If you crash a lot, I would recommend the two piece muffler. Less likey to damage a crankcase if you hit on the muffler side.

Thanks, DavidH. A very nice synopsis.

Sorry... got 1 and 2 baffle confused with 2 and 3 baffle (or chamber). Get the idea I have no idea what I'm talking about? :thinking

I opted for the BW pipe after seeing the sort of mounting conundrum the JK pipe presents, i.e. finding a good way to mount the pipe's support bracket to the frame. It should have arrived at my house today, so I'll get it installed tonight and hope that the wind conditions improve by the time the weekend rolls around (the forecast is not looking promising).
