View Full Version : What is the latest on the Open tailbox?
I have read that they are being switched out on the Spectra, but are they ok with the updated gears on the Extreme and Stratus? I know you need to keep the mesh set right. What else? Are the gears holding up? Are the shafts breaking?
Thanks

No problems on the glow helis. Just the Spectra due to the level of vibration.
i have seen gears (grey) strip and shafts break with the open box, and zero problems with the closed one.
do the math yourself.
Is there a part number for a complete closed box, that has four bolts that will fit on the open tailbox mount?

You can mount the closed gear box to the open gear box mount with just a couple of modifications.
On the mount you will need to open up one of the holes on one side where the bolt goes thru the boom. The hole will need to be open rearward towards the gear box.
Take one of the set screws out of the gear box that holds the input shaft. The bolt that goes thru the mount and boom will replace this set screw.
The gear box has three mounting lugs. Two of them will line up with two of the lugs on the mount. The other mounting lug on the gear box, put a sheet metal screw thru it and screw it directly to the plastic in the mount.
There is pictures in my gallery of the closed CNC gear box mounted on the open gear box style mount. I did this before the open gear boxes were available. I tested some of the open gear box mounts.

I just don't see how people are still having problems with the open boxes with the grey gears. I've got seven and all of them are fine. The only one I had problems with was on the Spectra.
David thats awesome !!
to do this mod with my closed box i will need the 123-86 (new clamp) and what else ?
should i need the 123-88 spacer as well ? i dont think i see it on your pics.
thanks.
