I can't believe my luck( quick bow to the heli gods LOL) a cell puffed mid flight, although in fact it did more than puff- a bright flash, pop and then the smoke. I'm running dual Wr becs and a dc-up as the 8717's sure are hungry, anyway I just manged to get it right side up before it lost all power and went to failsafe, only to watch it perform a pretty good auto- a tad of grass in the tail but no damage.

Apart from the lipo.

Complete and utter luck on the landing, I think the dc-up helped out- it holds about 4~5 seconds worth of energy to power the servos.

No rx pack on board, all powered by the main packs- two 5s

I pulled back the heatshrink to see what happed, the pack had just been charged on a cellpro 10s and looked mint both on looks and cell balance, but they are low end packs sold here in the Uk- Thought I'd give them a try out...

Edit- I just previewed the post and spotted a missing screw on the servo-LOL, so much for my maintenance.

Looks to me like your two 5S packs aren't matching? Are you using different brands at once? If so that will be your problem - your cells really need to be well matched in terms of capacity and wear.

Thats amazing you didnt end up with one melted logo, damage is very minimal. I guess it does pay to buy high end batteries and i'm still a firm believer of seperate Rx pack for good measure. At least the missing servo screw wasnt from the arm!

I can't decide whether you're very lucky, or the opposite.

That and cheap packs spell disaster almost always.

this is why i will NEVER use a bec on a large model.

glad you got it down all in one peice though, its horrible to see a logo go in like that (mine did when my power leads fell out)

Still, buy cheap buy twice, this applies to lipos more than any othe rproduct i feel

Thanks

That's incredible. Did it melt your canopy anywhere?

I like a separate rx battery on the bigger helis. A little bit more flight time, and if you fly too long, or your main battery just dies, you still have power to the servos and gyro. You were very lucky you still had control. I guess there was enough juice in the voltage regulator(s) (You said you had two) to keep the electronics alive for a few seconds. Good flying to save it!

Those packs were just a bit of a stop gap, picked up just to get the heli maidened and the V-bar dialed in. I really rate the FMA revolution packs but they've been hard to find, even now there's still no 5s packs available here in the UK. So with only one pair of 5s's flying time was limited, so I picked these up just to get some additional set up time- they've done the job I suppose but would of liked some more cycles.
Got to say also, they were purchased as a pair and charged as a pair and tbh they performed Ok. Balanced perfectly, voltage held up pretty well, although running slightly hot at around 110/120 f.

Both systems~ flightpack/bec have potential problems, I've opted for becs after having a nightmare time with flightpacks and multiple crashes a year or two ago, my luck seemed to change after going with the bec's and TBH I've had no problems since. After getting away with this I'm gonna stick with them, I was dead lucky to just have time to get the heli hovering upright before total power loss and it just floated down and stayed upright. No damage at all.
