Can I use a full size servo on the tail of the Trex 500, or does it need to be a micro?

you can use a full size but you will have to buy the tail servo plate from the 600 E to get it to work , the one in the kit is made for servo's such as futaba 9257 size servo's , no micro servos are used , they would be too small.....

I use a Futaba 9254.

I had to buy the 600E servo mount and the top lugs need to be sanded a bit to fit the 500 mounting brackets but it sits solid and I can easily get my heli balanced perfectly using 420grams of battery.

Full size servos FTW!!!

I've a BLS251 on my tail with a DS760 - ROCK SOLID!!
