I have rigged my started with a deans and have a spare 6 cell laying around. It fires up pretty hard.
Should I back it down a couple cells, or can the engines take the jolt? I will be using the high quality sullivan starter shaft, is there any change if stripping anything?
I like the idea of the extra torque and power and want to keep it if I can. I also disassbled the starter just to see what it was made of and everything in it is pretty heavy duty coper and parts. As long as I don't just stay on it I dont fear anything will burn out in it.

I'm running my Torquemaster 180 at 18V, but I haven't been doing it for long so I don't know the long-term effects. I think I've seen other people using high voltages without issues.

Eventually the starter will fail. I did it for a long time, the first thing that happened was the switch failed, took it apart and cleaned it and it came back to life, then after a while longer the brushes failed. Nothing failed that was tough to fix, but going to the field and having it die was a huge pain, so after a while I bought a Dynatron, it's stronger, and runs slower on the high voltage so it doesn't engage the clutch like the Hobbico did.

Ok, those were the answeres I needed. I will pop off one of the cells and see how it feels at 18V and if that is still too hot will back it on down to 14.
I am almost thing 14V will probably be enough pop for a 50.
Where do you pick up new brushes? Mine are still in good shape, but for future reference I wouldn't mind knowing where to pick up a set. I notices these brushes have the wired embedded in them.

12v is enough for a 50, it's just nice to have the extra grunt. I like 18v, it's not fast enough to engage the clutch, but has enough power to fire up my 90s.
I picked up brushes at my local Ace Hardware. I just brought the old ones in with me and they have a bunch of them in the hardware section near the screws and things.

Awsome, then I will go that route. Will bring it down to 18V and pickup some spares at Ace...they really are a helpful place :)

I do love the way my current starter running at 18V just takes a short pulse on the switch to start my OS 50 on every attempt except the first one of the day (when the engine is dry). I had an old starter (1980s vintage) that couldn't provide enough torque, mainly because the only thing keeping the cone from turning on the shaft was a lock washer.

The only bad thing about a "hot" starter is it can do real damage when the engine is hydro locked.
I had a couple of situations with my 600N pro where my starter wouln't turn the engine over. I use an old shool starter with a 12V gel cell in my TT carrymaster. I'm pretty sure that if i tried to turn over the engine with one of the types you are mentioning, it probably would have broken something. I don't need any help from my equipment to break things, so i'll stick with my 12v gel cell setup.

Yep... I have SEEN guys bend the con rod on a OS .91 with a hot starter! So yes be careful...
Funny I have a old 1983 Sullivan starter I ran on two 7S nicad packs and was always able to start my C-Spec .91 unless it was hydro locked. This was before lipos of course but this is what many used for years.... I am not a proponent of high power starters unless you know how to tell if your hydro locked. You WILL break your engine if your not careful.

A friend of mine used my hibbico 90 with an old Align 3s battery to start his Fury .90. I didn't think it was possible but it worked (I was thinking in my head I hope this doesn't blow up in his hands)
