I have two raptor 60 V2's. One with an OS 70 that I have had for a couple of months and one with a OS 61 that I purchased used a few weeks ago. It was a pretty worn out machine.

Well, I was going to put a OS70 in it because the engine compression was/seemed low, but ran across a really good deal on a brand new piston and sleeve for the OS61. The bearings looked and felt perfect so I just rebuilt it without changing bearings.

I am having trouble tuning this thing because I think it is doing something funky..... or I am.

This explanation is not going to be easy.... OK... It will idle well and once I have it into a hover it will run well, however it spits and sputters trying to get it from idle to a flying headspeed. The only way I can get it past this low-mid throttle is to push the stick all the way up(opening the throttle all the way). Then, the engine seems to start working properly. Even running OK when I pull back on it briefly. I've leaned and richened the low and midrange needles with no luck. I've actually turned the midrange in until it stopped to see if I could get it lean enough.... No luck.

It is like the engine has to be pushed to heat up before it will start running right. If I let it idle, I have to go throught the same deal again to get the head to speed up. I've tried both new ENYA 3 and OS 8 plugs. Both act the same in the heli.

What am I missing?

By the way, I'd like to see this forum take off and do well.

This is only a guess but did you put a new ring on the piston or did you use the old one. Sorry but I could not read what you had done in regards to the ring replacement.
If you did put a new ring in just make sure you have not bent it during installation. Very easy to do and hard to see.
If you put the old ring in then I would suggest a new one be fitted.

The problem is that the "transition" is too rich You have leaned the "high" too much and are trying to correct it by opening the mid. try 1.8 turns out on the main and the mid closed. Adjust for good climb outs then only then open the mid to get a good hover.

I replaced the ring when I replaced the piston and sleeve and was very careful not to break the ring. I haven't taken the engine apart to verify it hasn't broken, but can look into the exhaust and see the ring in position and that it seems to spring out like I would expect.

I have tried going closed on the mid and 1 turn out on the main and it is still rich in the transition. Of course with the main closed, one turn out on the top end it too lean. Right now, I have it 7/8 turn out on the mid and 1 turn out on the main.

Once it is in a hover it will run well, but between hover and idle it is terrible.
