I have an OS 50 Hyper 4 tanks through, and have been having lockup problems with the fan/clutch and clutch bell. I tried a new fan and its pretty much the same.

I noticed that the crank shaft has in and out play, possibly a millimeter or 2 with the back plate installed and even more with the backplate off. I also noticed that the fan just barely comes into contact with the bearing when tightened and not enough to remove the play.

Possibly not enough threads on the crankshaft?
Should there be any in and out play in the crank?

Just a thought.
There is a black metal washer that comes with the engine and should be installed between the fan and the front bearing.
Are you using this washer?
If the washer is not in place then the pressure from the starter will force the crankshaft back into to engine backplate.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this?

If this in on a Raptor and the fan screws onto the crank. Jeff probably has the correct solution. You need to use the washer that comes with the engine to go between the fan and the front bearing. It also sounds like to me that the fan is not putting any load onto the crankshaft.
