Hi, I just need some advice on installing this Bec in my Blade 400 3D. I just need a rundown on the procedures and where to mount the Bec. It says to install the Bec two inches away from the receiver, any help will be appriciated.
JohnAu.
My SportBEC is mounted on the outer starboard side of the main frame (opposite of the servo) and held in place with velcro. The BEC sits in the "scoop" portion on the side of the canopy. I have mine set for a 6V feed to the servos. You pull the connector from the receiver (I think it is the "Throttle" connector) and plug it into the BEC, then connect the BEC output to the reciever. On a tip from LockMD I bought a Deans connector and some wire to make an extension for the original battery leads and connected the BEC power leads to the Deans connecor. The beauty of this is that you can now connect/disconnect the battery without removing the canopy.

What K.C. said.....originally had mine sitting on top esc :wow2: not a good spot! I now have it wire tied to the frame......its next to the rx so I'm not sure how important it is to be 2" away but I havent noticed any probs and yes, I have mine in 6V too.

Thanks KC and LockMD for your help. I will be running it at 6v but i need a stepdown voltage regulator for the tail servo but thats easy to fit.

I am looking at the GY401 Gyro w/SMM Technology/S9650 SERVO DIGITAL MINI (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0161p?&I=LZ1551)
upgrade from stock but hear I'd have to upgrade to the 6v BEC for the 9650. Is this right?
TheFutaba GY401 Gyro w/S9254 Digital Servo (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFZP2&P=ML) is $25 more but I could stay with the stock ESC right? I am also upgrading the main servos to HT-65MG's if that effects overall voltage from the stock setup.
I know nothing about the ESC's / BEC's or which voltage I should be running when upgrading so don't flame me please. I'm trying to absorb all this as fast as possible and even installed a liquid nitrogen cooling system for my tiny brain:YeaBaby:

what is the point of a BEC i thot they were for running 22.2 volt setups like a t-rex 600 ep

Maybe I should just ask how to test when a 6v BEC is needed. Uncle Sam's $600 just cleared and I'd like to spend it "ALL" but I really don't know if I need a bigger BEC. Any advice?

I think the general answer is if you upgrade your servos you should install an external BEC too.

Simple enough. Thanks
Here's a posting from rcuniverse:
Some electronics do not like 6V. I know that HS50 servos do not like 6V. But the HS56 does. Faster. More torque. I went with the 6V version.
I know they're talking different servos here but will 6 volts be ok with the upgrades mentioned in my earlier post on the Blade?

Good point, you'll have to check out the specs of what you plan on installing - yes some servos will fry running at 6V I am running ds285's on cyclic and a 3400G on tail 6V is fine for me.

those are digital? if so, I would add an external bec sooner than later.

well I did find this on them: Hitec announces a new Micro class servo, the HS-65MG has long lasting and durable Metal gears and are Hitec’s most powerful servo’s in the micro class, with over 26oz/in of power at 6 volts.
so they can handle 6V - if it were me, I would get it and run in 6V.
wait what tail servo do you have?

Yup 3400G I have it too......it can be ran in 6V too so you would be good to go.

I just ordered the GY401Gyro/S9257 Digital Rudder Servo and the HiTec HS-65HB set. So I went ahead a got the SportBEC from Dimensions too. Although, I just found the spec voltage for the 65HB's:
Speed: 0.14/60° @ 4.8V
Output Torque: 24.99 oz-in @ 4.8V
So does this mean I shouldn't run it in 6v? Wonder if switching it to 5v will be too much.
Here is the SportBEC description from Dimension's site.

Cyclic servos could have handled it but that tail can NOT you must leave your SportBEC in 5V or you will fry the tail servo.

Just found this while looking for specs on the S9257:
Voltage- use only with a 4.8V battery. (if you use it with a higher voltage battery it needs to be regulated to 6V)
We're 11.1v so trust it or be safe by switching it to 5v setting?

Voltage- use only with a 4.8V
basically means you are stuck at 5V only do not put it in 6V
11.1V is your heli batt.....the internal bec is only supplying ?V way lower 5 at most maybe less, not sure of the exact number just dont put your bec in 6V mode and you'll be fine.

Gsquared08, just get a step-down voltage regulator if your tail servo can only run at 5v then you can run your bec at 6v for the cyclic servo's. Thats all i did with my S9257 tail servo and hs-65mg cyclic servo's.
