i'm going to be getting an E550. are there any upgrades that have to be bought in order for this heli to fly good? safety?

what blades do you recommend i start out with?

i have built a few heli's, but i'd like some input from the raptor crowd on this subject. thank you

Kevin

Hi well done.
First off get the SUS tail hub, its a must.
You can use wood rotors for learning.

As you progress minimum would be: carbon rotors (any known brand really), 11T pinion to up the headspeed 200RPM, red dampers, metal rotor hub.

Thats it, great heli. Also i do not use a flight pack, i use a hyperion TICOOL UBEC good for up to 10S lipo

thanks for the tips.

for the electronics, i plan on using my quickray power 1076kv motor(hacker A40-10L), phoenix 60 esc, align 3 amp bec, with 2000 mah kong power rx pack, ar7000, 9252's on cyclic, and a 9254/401 with a 5.1v step down for the tail. batteries are true rc 4000 mah 6s stick packs. they are 10c, but for now should give me good flight times. i'm really looking forward to this build.

what pinion should i use with this combo? and should i set this up in govenor mode, or not? long flight times are my goal as of now. 8 minutes of hovering around, and orientation training would make me happy.

thanks in advance to all.

10T pinion for that motor for learning. 11T for sport flying.
Everything except the ESC and lipos look good. The ESC needs to be higher, 75A for 6S to be safe and also the 10C batts will not last long, they will probably puff.

ok, so how about a castle creations HV85. i have the castle link. i was really hoping to use this speed controller, but if it isn't safe to use with 6S, i'd rather just put it away for later.

how about some battery suggestions for this model. should i go with a 6S stick pack from flightpower? they are expensive, but if that's what i need, i will get them.

FLIGHTPOWER EVO25-4350 6S1p 22.2V 25C 108.75A CONTINUOUS, 50C 217.5 AMP BURSTS DIMMENSIONS: 333MM/21MM/47MM

$299.99 each

HV85 will be fine, but i've heard mix reports on the castle stuff. I would get the align 75A is only $90 US or the original ace hobby from Thunder Tiger as recommended for the E550 is only like $100US.

Those batts should fit but the flightpower ones have the lead sticking out the side and can make removing and installing it a pain.
You can get cheaper lipos than that for it. Look at amainhobbies.com there are some good packs there.

Steer clear of the HV85 as it has serious issues with gov mode. I had one in my E550 and flew it on six cells, no problem as it is rated from 6 to 10 cells. In heli fixed endpoint it is an awesome ESC, but if you are like me, fly gov mode only, then the stock ACE ESC is better. I am currently flying a MGM Commpro 80 A Heli ESC, AWESOME, expensive and difficult to program, BUT what an ESC, 1200 steps across throttle travel, 2 gov modes that work AWESOME. Heatsinks, switching BEC and BRIGHT warning LED + buzzer included. Really something special.

I use a HV85 in gov mode on my 550 without any issues, but maybe others have problems...seems to be a common ESC on this size of bird. Though I am not doing any 3D as a newbie, so maybe that is where the governor falters. I fly A123 (10s and 12s), as LiPo is too expensive and too slow to charge...I tolerate it for my E325, for now.

I found the bargain wood blades to be the Mavvrik ones from heliproz, they have good deals on replacement parts as well. Down the road, you can throw a Kasama head on it.

finless said he had static issues with the HV85. i hate to not use this castle link, but i think i'm going with a sure thing. the stock one looks fine. the cc link goes in the tool box for now.
