Get it off the ground to be sure that it's going backwards. The CX2 does weird things on lift off, or as you say "bunny hops". Get it at least 12" off the ground so it stabilizes, then see how it reacts. Don't worry about losing control, the CX2 will hover pretty much hands off, you just need to take off quickly.
If it's still going backwards, then yes trim the swash by messing with the control links...

I like to have "radio trims" at neutral and then trim the swashplate flat & level right out of the box. This gives you a much better "range of trim" right from the get go.
As mentioned above when the heli is low to the ground it's suffering from it's own turbulence (known as ground affect) and in order to get out of it you need to be somewhere between 1x and 2x the length of the rotor disk off the ground. The problem is if the heli is WAY out of trim (as it sounds like yours may be) just "Punching" it 2 - 3 feet off the ground is leading to some type of damage. I'd trim it by eye (trims centered and swash plate centered) then try it again. It should fly relatively good right off the bat with some "Waddling" from side to side but it should be "controllable".
Trim it level then give it another try. Either way let us know what you find out.

I'd check a couple of things with the CX2. First off these guys are right on - check your swash plate first and make sure it is level. But I would also suggest checking the balance also. I have found that just a little bit of off center balancing makes a great deal of difference with this heli. I do admit that I balance mine slightly nose heavy but remember I stress it should be ever so slight. This has seemed to give me the best flights.
To illustrate how much balance effects the heli I can tell you this. When I'm doing a test without the canopy on I always have to trim the unit for forward flight to maintain hover.
As for stability, mine will hover pretty well from about 6'' on up. The closer to the ground the more input without doubt. I have also found that just a little breeze makes a great deal of difference. Flying one night in the garage while a storm was raging outside I found myself having to constantly pull the heli rearward to keep from slamming into the garage door. Later I checked with a tissue and there was a massive suction going on around the door. Any breeze will make the heli drift a lot.
Just a few things I've learned, hope they help!

Check your Swashplate. Just a little off and it will do funny things. Also make sure that your battery is staying slid all the way forward. if the battery slids back thru viberations or bouncing it will tind tio make it go backwards.
