Is there an adapter you can use so you can use your own controller an not have to go through the controller that came with G3??

No you can't. G3 uses the Controller as a Dongle in order to verify you have a licensed copy of the program. You CAN use your own controller. Just plug it up to the back of the G3 controller and away you go. There is a bit more setup involved if you do it that way.
