Trex700 Build videos!

So I am not sure I will ever be able to make a post of me saying WHICH is better....

Not looking for an overall which is better actually. That's like asking which is better between an NSX and a Corvette.

But I'm curious what were the strong points for each heli, what were the week points, how did the builds compare, what was your overall general impressions for each build, etc...

Which has the better parts and overall materials quality? The Aurora or the 700?

My Trex 600E is made to a fair bit lower standard than my Raptor 90SE but there's a significant difference in price to match. What gets me about the 600 is all those plastic parts. They're legion and the moldings used aren't brilliant quality either. My question is has the 700 cut corners on parts and left the market open to theirs and others 'upgrades'.

I've been watching and following both the Avant & 700 build videos but its hard to access the quality of the kits from video.

Hmmmm this is tuff for me guys.... But here goes.

First the Trex700 build and quality is the BEST from Align yet! Since I don;t have a lot of flight time on the T700 yet I cannot comment as to reliability and bearing quality. That's going to have to wait. The 700 has NO adjustments so went together easy which is why I was done with it first. BUT having said that, that doesn't mean it's better in any way. Production will HAVE to hold the tolerances of the frame holes, etc for every kit like mine was or things will become a problem since you cant adjust backlash on anything. So long term only YOU folks will be able to see how that goes. I think Align has put a lot into this thing and it shows.

The Aurora is a "mans" heli. As you see it has more things to adjust and thus more tinkering BUT getting these adjustments right ensures a damn reliable heli! You are not tied to a manufacturers getting every frame side made 100% the same 1000's of times. YOU the user gets to make sure things mesh properly. So that's a good thing for some but might not be for others.... AGAIN since I have not flown the Aurora yet nor had time on it, bearing longevity and things like that CANT be known any other way.

So as to which has better quality of parts... DUDES.... looking at it on the bench you can judge some things but reliability and running the darn things tells the real truth about quality so seriously... Both kits look good on the bench as you can see from my videos but REAL quality gets demonstrated with MANY flights.....

Thanks Bob, I guess it was a big ask to press you on which you feel is better at this time.

I'm biased towards the Avant myself, they have a long history of high end and reliable machines. The Align stuff is easily available, fly very well and are pretty cheap to maintain but I can't help but think they've got that mass produced feel to them. I'm hoping the 700 changes that.

Look forward to any future revelations and particularly the completion of your Avant.

this is for everyone else building the kit: Just a small thing that i've "noticed" .... be very carefull while tightening those two socket screws into the rotorhead block! i've just broke my main shaft (and the scew) because i've over tightened one of these (allthough i don't consider myself to be a strong person ;-) )..... i think i'll have to fix that with a second screw which goes through the whole thing ;-)

If you mean the two screws that hold the seesaw to the head these dont have to be stupid tight, just tight! I very much doubt you have broke your mainshaft either! This is mounted using a jesus bolt using the hole below where the seesaw mounts and at that stage of the build should not even be in play yet!

no i mean those two M4 screws just ABOVE where the jesus bolt goes in. there is one on each side of the rotor head housing...... i broke the threads (and screws :-) ) by overtightening them.

I might get a second jesus bolt like screw from a DIY shop and just put that screw through those two holes as i don't think i'll find a spare mainshaft for the 700 somewhere yet ;-)

do you know which screws i'm talking about ?

Those screws are to make sure that the head does NOT waddle on the main shaft... A though bolt "might" work just as good but make sure it is tight! On a 90 the head has a LOT of forces and waddle on the main shaft should not happen or it can shear the jesus bolt!

Look at my Aurora build... Same type of screws... There is a reason for them!

Anyway... I've bought an m4x24 screw (same length as Jesus bolt) and screwed it into the thread which was still good (and lock tided it of course) and then I've applied a nylon nut on the other side just like the Jesus bolt.

My concern was the clearance with the mixing arms... but it seems to be fine.

Those threads on the main shaft really seem to be not that strong !

Do you think I might run into problems with a through bolt instead of those two screws ?

BTW: I just ran into the same issue about the lengths of the links from the swash plate to the mixing arms yesterday... the manual still said the rods are supposed to be 50mm but are in fact 60mm :-).... so they haven't fixed that yet in the manual.

Secondly... I'm also using the thinnest washer for the main shaft....and I had a hard time getting the Jesus bolt into the main gear myself... now the head sits on the main gear real tight!

One bolt through both the short bolt holes should be OK and not foul anything - you won't even have to drill out the mast as you've stripped th threads :)

The links are a tad under 60mm - mine were 58mm and as you say not 50mm as shown - they do come out at the correct length of 77mm though as depicted :)

Did your tailcase line up with the front case/heli perfectly ? no matter what i do... it is still slightly tilt to the right (if watched from the rear)??!
