View Full Version : Duel Rate,Expo

Hi,I'm progressing into forward flight and I'm finding im over reacting slightly on my controls.
This is when I'm turning.If I'm right in saying I'm giving it slight aileron then a touch elev then rudder all at the same time but in that order if you know what i mean.
Ive decided the duel rates need adjusting.
So Ive put aileron on %75,elev on %80 and rudder on %80.
My expo is elev %50.Aileron %35,Rudder %40
I was wondering what people had on there transmitter.

Another question when am i supposed to go into idle up 1.I'm flicking the switch when I'm about six feet up.

Any help would be appreciated.

I fly ZERO expo, and have never cared for dual rates. I've found it easier to adjust ME to the machine, rather than the other way around. If it works for you and you are smart enough to figure out how to get it right, go for it!
Switching into idle up is a personal preference, I get into it as soon as I verify the engine is making the power and is not too lean, the following flights I go idle up from the spool up and never leave until I land..

I like LameBird don't care much for dual rates and so I have never used the feature, however I do use expo. I run 35% on aileron, 35% on elevator and 35% on the tail. :)


I get into it as soon as I verify the engine is making the power and is not too lean, the following flights I go idle up from the spool up and never leave until I land..


I do exactly the same thing. :)

As for the use of expo. We need to know which radio you have in order to tell you the proper way to adjust it.
Futaba and JR adjust the expo directly opposite from each other.

I run No expo and No dual rates. For me dual rates just complicate radio programming and also radio use when flying. I try to keep it very simple so my simple mind can keep up. As Wayne said, I also tune the me to the machine and the machine mechanically to my liking. It is a good learning experience as well to do it like this.

Keep it simple is what I have learned the hard way to do. Thank you Clintstone!!

I have a JR Propo X-378 transmitter flying a shuttle zts.
Lamebird,do you mean you go into idle up while still on the ground.
I take it you throttle up to just before lift off then flick to idle up and the reverse when landing,you land then flick to normal.

The reason I'm looking at the duel rates and expo is to counter the over reaction not only on moving about but more to do with when i get into a sticky situation.
Or should i try and avoid the sticky situations :)

Most folks do a quick 'hop' with a punchout to confirm needle settings, then switch into idle up. I do the same, then on each succesive flight, I go into idle up 1 before liftoff, or during the first couple feet, depending on what I am trying. (note; trying not performing! ;) ) After a few tips from the 'big dogs' I now hit throttle hold to land, usually from 3 ft or so. This is because my curves in normal are too liberal, and will compress the main landing gear before a noticeable drop in engine speed, and I believe it was the cause of breaking landing gear supports in the past.
If you feel your controls are too sensitive, try the expo or change the bell-hiller ratio, or paddles to get where you feel more comfy.
As I said earlier, I adjust myself to the machine, I look a little wobbly the first minute or two out, then settle down.

On my Evo 50 I put in expo of -45 -45 and -25% on the rudder. I am just hovering it right now but it was way too touchy. I was running -30 -30 and -25 on my Stinger 30 but once I got into the 50 with carbon blades it didnt seem like enough. Once I get it broken in and start FF I'll back it up a bit. BTW I'm futaba so its negative.

Here is my take on the dual rate expo thing:

I want all axii on my machine to "feel" the same. I want the elevator to react the same ad the aileron, and rudder. Expo works really well for this. MOST of the time I use expo on the tail, depending on the gyro. I don't have any on my Sceadu with the 401, but about 30% on my Vigor with the 502, thus I suspect the 401 to have a bit of expo type programming in it already. If one axis feels quicker than another, use a bit of expo to soften it around the center, so it feels right to you.

Dual rates, I mostly don't use. On a heading hold gyro, though, the end points of the rudder channel (not the gain channel) determine the speed of the piroette, so they can be handy for taming the tail down when trying to learn all those wonderful piro flips and piro loops and piro whatevers.

Hope this lends a bit of perspective.
