View Full Version : First crash, need help with avoiding in the future!

I just stepped up from a CP Pro to Blade 400, and on my 8th flight had my first crash.

I followed the steps in the manual and have been following the usual advice on the forums for getting started with the B400. I checked every screw and confirmed that everything was working as it should before each flight.

I was flying this afternoon in a large, empty park and while I was in slow forward flight about 20 feet infront of me and at maybe 20-30 feet altitude I noticed some interference with the radio. Within a second, I had no control of the heli whatsoever and I watched it plummet HARD into the ground nose first with nothing I could do. THUD!

Looks like the damage is as follows:

- Broken blades
- Broken canopy (totally smashed, need a new one)
- End of battery that faces the front of the heli badly smashed in. I presume with any visible physical damage to a lipo it can't be used again?
- Stripped gears on the two rear servos (may also have burned them out, don't know yet.)
- Bent flybar
- Bent feathering shaft
- Snapped blade grip

Anyway, the reason for the thread (other than for other people to smile because they've been there before or if they're lucky smile because they haven't been there yet!) is to try and figure out if there's anything I missed prior to flying that could have helped avoid the radio locking out. I am also wondering what I can do in the future to help the same thing occuring. Would it be best to avoid that particular park? Is there anything I can do about something like this? I know it was not a range issue, I was literally 20 feet away, and had been flying around this exact spot for the duration of the previous battery.

Crashes caused directly by my flying, I can deal with more easily. That's within my control and I can figure out what to do to avoid it next time. But with something like this I think I'm going to be nervous flying again in the near future incase it happens again and I have another $100+ crash.

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions....

Believe me 30-40 bucks your up in the air again.

Yes, that plus $60 to replace the damaged battery ;) Even so, I'm ok with whatever it takes to get it back in the air. Mostly just worried about it happening again.

go into setup mode on the transmitter and go to range test, and do a range test on the radio before each flight. The only other way to avoid crashing is to not fly.

You know I'm really skeptical of the heli loosing control. There was a thread way back of the tx antenna wire broke and the heli lost signal, or maybe the antenna leads out of your rx in the heli was pulled out or disconnected. This is my opinion please check and range check again.

When you lost control did you notice if just the blades stop spinning and the servos still worked or the blades were still spinning and the servo's stop responding. or everything stoped look at your wires going into your reciever for any small breaks some crashes have small cuts in the wire that you can see well.

Don't know if this could have caused your crash but check Power Setting under Setup List. It should be on B-US 247 per manual. Mine came out of box set on A-EU 328 for Euro. countries. Changed mine before 1'st flight.

Wow, mine was set to A-EU 328 out of the box also and I've been flying it like that for a while. Anyone know what the difference is between that and B-US 247?

Thankyou for the replies. I will be totally honest here so you guys can learn from my mistakes :P

Firstly, I did not do a range check. I did everything I could to make sure the heli was in good mechanical shape, and checked my settings were all ok in the radio, but did not range check. I assume this checks for possible sources of interference as well as radio range, which would have been a very good thing!

The rx still has both antennas, and they are pointing out directly to the side as per the manual.

hawaiian heli: the blades were still spinning (but then they always would on this kind of heli right with the autorotation gear?) but I lost all response from the servos. As soon as it started to go nose down I pulled back and nothing happened.

Kirkgang, it was on the EU setting for power at the time. Thanks for the suggestion. I would be very interested in learning more about this to see if this in any way could have caused the crash. I don't know how critical this is but would definitely like to find out so I can rule it out.

Thanks guys.
