Trainer function on 7c

Can someone tell me if I need the same xtal number as my mates tx to use the buddy cable?
I will be the teacher and he will be the student but I have never used the function in my 7c and am not sure, he has a 6ex also some tips would be great

No it does not have to be on the same frequency. The Slave radio will not even be turned on. It will probably come on when you plug in the trainer cord from the Master to the Slave.
