How can you tell if the rear bering is bad? By the sound, performance, engine temperature?
If it is bad and I dont know it, what can happen?
thank you.

mostly sound. if you hear a squeek or chirp at idle, your rear bearing is going bad.
worst case scenario, if you keep running it, the bearing "could" shatter and destory the internals of the engine...

The sound is usually the first sign. When the engine is idleing, it sounds like you're shaking one of those plasitic containers of "TicTacs" in you hand.... It's hard to describe, but once you hear it, you'll know what I mean.
If a bad bearing is not replaced, it will eventually ruin the engine beyond repair. When in doubt, change it. It's an easy fix, and a new bearing only costs about $10.

Mine's ok but I'm sure it WILL go...
Is there a replacement which offers more longevity over the stock bearing?

Best bet to get a stainless bearing (http://www.rc-bearings.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=737&osCsid=f083adaf75ff2e33cba65068d3434294)- the exhaust fumes quickly corrode the rear - you can also use ceramic bearings - I have one but don't think the extra price justified

Cheap ones last as long as expensive ones. Just keep an ear on it, if you hear the rattle replace it.

If you look at the top of this forum area, you'll see Mercuriell's repair video thread, which has a video of replacing the bearings in a couple of engines, including the OS 50 Hyper. Here's a quick link to the thread:

Thank you guys,
I am positive my bearing is gone. I found out 3 weeks ago I was running WAY to fast my head speed. Maybe it is premature dammage. I have 4 gallons on it.
Can you suggest a good replacement part? Boca bearings or other.
Thank you

mine went bad just after 4 gallons.
the engine started making high noise and burning glow plugs on every single tank
now thinking switching to rl53

Mine came bad right from the factory. I was one of the first to get a 600n at our field and the other guy that has ones said it was just the align muffler sound. I flew 2 gallons threw it and guys looked at it alot and said it was never right. So 1 day we took the engine apart the the guy that helped me said it was one of the worst bearings he has ever seen. Theres a post going around that hyper had a bad batch of bearings. If you take yours out and it has no markings on it like the # of the bearing it is one of the bad ones. Mine had no markings on it and it was bad from day1...

Boca bearings are overpriced. Mercuriell embedded a link to rc-bearings.com in his post, which is a very popular place to get high quality bearings at a reasonable price.

I have just replaced my bearings, I too was unsure how I would know when they had gone but at idle the different sound is easy to hear

there are different quality bearings, the ones that came in the engine are basically the lowest quality.
Anything better will last a lot longer, I doubt stainless will be the 'end all' as the cage capturing the balls be it phenolic or metal will wear before the balls or races, and the cage is almost always the part that destroys engines.
