I've ran into a guy at the local park a few times that keeps playing with one. The first time I talked to him, he wasn't very impressed either. I suggested that he get a brushless motor and a LiPo battery. He found the stuff that would work at a HobbyTown store. Then it would take off and fly pretty good, with much better flight times. It was pretty jerky, though. That's when I noticed it had (don't know what they're called) actuators ??? instead of proportional servos. I told him to get something cheap to try. I think I suggested something like HiTec HS-55's. I don't really remember. About $10 each. Anyways, I saw him flying it again as I drove by a few weeks ago and it looks like it is flying really good now.
I'm sure the guy has about $200 into it by now, but he was all smiles when I honked the horn at him.
If you're up to it, try different electronics in it and see how it goes.

im not really looking to put that muck into it since its foam, but a brushless motor and lipo battery sounds resonable. what size did he put in it?

I'm not sure. I'll keep an eye out for him and ask the next time we talk.
