Hey Freaks

I'm looking to buy a plank that uses the same 6S packs I use on my 600E.

What i'm wondering is, will any of the stock electronics go on the plank?

I'm talking the 75A ESC, EXT BEC, and the 600XL Brushless motor. I bought 2 kits originally and have this sitting around looking for a use.

Here is a link to the plank.

They call for a 400KV motor... Wouldn't that be a fraction of what your 600XL is rated at?

You'd need a gear reduction box of some sort or another motor methinks. I would be willing to bet the ESC would work as planks generally draw far less than helis.

Thanks tz.

I was surprised at the kv difference in motors, being that the plank weighs almost exactly the same as my heli. Maybe someone could shed some light on this. Is it because of the difference in the prop vs the blades?

There was a big discussion on the meaning of KV.

http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=74675

As helis require a "constant" but relatively low headspeed (compared to an airplane prop) they obtain this through gearing down a high speed motor (or engine). That's why we "spool up".

Airplanes need to be able to use a much wider spread of rpm and be matched to the prop they are turning. A glow airplane engine will idle at between 1500~3000 rpm (2 and 4 strokes combined) which pretty much covers the range of heli headspeed. When the juice is applied they quickly crank up to 10,000 or more.

A motor with a high KV will spin the prop faster, but at a higher draw and will require much more in the way of amps and heat. A low KV has the grunt and is more efficient for direct drive.

Thanks for the info tz. I see now the reason for the difference in kv. I will buy the recommended motor for the plank.

Basic reason, helis have gear reduction. Sort of have to.

Yea, that too... :noteworthy

You think I could get my ceiling fan motor to work in a heli with no gearing? It weighs in at around 45lbs. But I bet the KV rating is about... well, 4.0. :YeaBaby:

And you're not 100% correct this time. My first heli, that Cox thing with the TD .010 on it didn't have no stinkin' gear reduction. It had a proper prop, which probably in itself didn't do much but turn the engine around (and chop my fingers when it fired before the spring was wound) which drove the main blades till it ran out of fuel then "auto'd" back down. The only problem was finding it...

my .02 on the pulse. i've got the pulse 40, but am using a glow engine. this plane is very sweet. on high rates it'll give ya an ear to ear grin when wringing it out. on low rates it's very relaxing and almost lands itself. very nice slow flight too.

Exactly why I wanted it. I like the fact that it is a sport plane but lands well.
