View Full Version : Fuel Puddles on Extreme Bottom Plate During Flight

I am flying a very common Fury Extreme set-up:

YS80 STII
Hatori SB-16
9252
401/9253
Futaba 8UHP
GV1
etc.

The problem I have is that after each flight I notice there is a tremendous amount of fuel that puddles (actual it completely covers) on the bottom plate of the helicopter. I use to just pass it off as acceptable because I have run the engine rich for quite some time for break-in purposes. I have recently leaned it out some but definitely not to the point where the smoke trail disappears. Not even close to that.

I recently switched from Magnum 30% to the new Curtis 30%. I went out to start the machine yesterday and it would not even idle. This is the first time I have ever had starting and idling problems. I noticed fuel dripping from around the outside of the cylinder head fins and collecting on the bottom plate. It really appears to me that I am losing a lot of unburned fuel. This machine has never really been all that good on "gas mileage". The engine has probably 3 gallons through it so it isn't a matter of it being worn out.

I would say that my next step is probably to pull the engine and check for anything unusual in and around the carb. I need to pull the engine anyway because my optical pick-up on the GV1 doesn't work and I want to convert over to magnetic.

I am running a header tank just like most of us do. I changed the glo-plug (Enya 3) and it didn't help.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If I need to take some pictures of the machine I can do that.

Thanks

My first thought was maybe a loose head.
I've got a puddle on one of my Extreme's also, about 3 yrs of flying on the motor
YS80 and it's about due for replacement to YS91 anyway.
I noticed a hairline crack near where the rear bearing area is and it has worked it's
way around from the muffler side to the needle side.

remove ALL bolts from engine, clean and reassemble with locktite.
Its common for YS to loosen after a few runs when new, especially if you don't locktite everything.
