Just thought I would share my new find. I have been flying for about 6 weeks now, and have just started pushing past a hover. I was flying at a local chuch lawn and found a foam plate lying in the grass, so I decided to see if I could move it with rotorwash. It worked, then I started trying to chase it, pushing it around, even moving it side to side. My hover skills have gotten much better. It seems that it gets my mind off being scared of a crash and more focused on heli location/control. Hope this helps someone!:)

You may have been experiencing the same problem I had initially: I was so transfixed on trying to keep the heli level that I wasn't paying enough attention to its movement and the heli was drifting all over the place. Once I gave up the idea of trying to keep the rotor level and started paying attention to movement of the heli relative to the ground, my flying improved considerably.

hmmm now that i think of it me thinks that's how i fly as well. i have also noticed the the rotor does not sit level in a hover. it leans a bit to the right. that was the first revelation i got when hovering started to click. i still don't hover all that nice, but i can almost hover a full pack.

Some of the best practice for fine-tuning your hovering is doing soft landings over and over. It forces you to keep the heli completely still in the horizontal plane as you set it down. If you find yourself drifting too much as you approach the ground, you can always give some positive collective to abort the landing.

i'll give that a try tonight. mined you though i'm not slamming into the ground. i'm only 3' off the ground currently. no training gear anymore, so it's no longer a controlled crash, but ugly landing i guess i'd call it. i like the thought of practicing landings, but intentional forward flight isn't being practiced as of yet. my hover box is about 6-8' currently. sometimes i do manage a totally still hover for maybe 10 sec or so.

One of the things that I work on every so often is doing a slow piro in one direction and try to keep the heli in a stable hover throughout the piro. Just give a slight amount of rudder and try to keep it in a stable hover. It's quite difficult at first but has helped me quite a bit. I tried it on the sim first before I tried it with my real heli. Just thought I'd pass it along. Will help with orientation too. Good luck and keep on flying!
