I already have a 5s pack I use on a plane so I'm temped to use 5s on the TREX 500.... what are the main factors to think about when deciding on 5s or 6s. I heard the 5s makes for longer flight times but the 6s feels better in the air.... any help you 500 freaks can give would be great.

I think it depends on your style of flying. For sport flying and mild 3d, 5s will give you much longer flying time and adequate power. Even for banging 3D, you can use 5s but you'll have to be a little better with your collective management. If you just want a lot of power and a lighter setup (albeit shorter flight times), then 6s running around 2800-2900 will really suit your flying. I have heard the 5s setup with Protek 4000mAH batteries are very good and give you long flight times. If you have a 5s battery and want to use this, then just go 5s. With the switch of a pinion and change in your throttle curves, you can got 6s relatively quickly.

I went 5s because I have a Cellpro 10s charger and wanted the ability to charge two packs at the same time. The power is great on 15T but could be more I'm sure. I'm just sport flying right now. I'm sure I'll end up going with the Scorpion 1900kv in a few weeks. I hear you can actually fly hard 3d with that motor on 5s. Plus I like scorpion quality and their prices.

Try it on 5s and see what you think.

i went 5s because i had two packs already on the shelf i got for a project that never manifested itself. in truth, it's the reason i justified buying the 500 in the first place--but, i digress.

if you're sport flying (circuits, flips, rolls, stalls, etc.) i think 5s is nice on 15-16T. but, if you want to fly harder i think that headspeed is a little hard on the packs. in theory the flight time is longer. but, you also have to mind the temp of the packs. so, in addition to limiting the discharge to 80%, i limit flight to 125°F. in my case running 16T on 4000mah packs, i still only get 4:40 minutes of hard, collective 3D flight before i hit 125°F. i still only put about 2400-2500mah back in...but, the packs are cooking. and, after about 60-70 cycles on the packs they are pretty tired, puffing a little after every flight now.

when these two packs die, i'm going 6s 14T.

I was in the same boat as you. I had four 5S 3700 25C packs that I'm using in my 3D Hobbyshop Extra 300 SHP. Now I'm using the same packs in my T-500 with a 15t pinion. I'm just hovering and doing circuits and getting 8 minutes and putting 75% back in. The power is scary at this point. Packs are just slightly warm after a flight. I'm thinking of picking up a couple more. Also, want to figure out what heli would work good with using 2 packs in a 10S configuration.
