ok...
I have just purchased one of these machines and am looking for suggestions on a motor / servo combo (I plan to use my DX6i (when I get my new antenna... and AR6200)).
I have been looking at OS .46ax with Futaba S3001 servos. Anyone have some alternative suggestions? I am not looking for speed, but a stable and reliable engine.
Going this route (away from Foamies) means I have to build my own runway. Please could you let me know what your local club runways dimensions are approx. I have a good friend with lots of arable farm land and access to cheap labour to flatten a given area.
Thanks in advance!

Ours is 250' long x 24' wide.

1000' x 50'
dont try and land on a small runway until your very proficient at landing faster airplanes.

500' x 60'. Plenty of room for the P-51. I'd guess you'd want 250' as a minimum. I'm hoping to get the Hellcat soon myself. Having watched others land theirs I'd say 100' is all you need but that would leave zero room for mistakes and you'd need to get it right on the money.

Thanks for the advice. We're making it 300 x 75 with long grass on either end. The plane has had a bit of delay, so I am back to foamies to practice a bit more. I also bought a H9 Raptor (which is now with me) and a Hobbico Avistar. I plan to start with the Avistar as everything I have heard about H9 PTS's is that they are not really good trainers at all.
We have an issue with cows on the runway at the current time, so we are negotiating rights to field at certain times of the day.

I just built the Hangar 9 Mustang PTS arf. I also have been flying the arf of this same plane with the evelution 46. The evelution runs great and is plent fast. The plane is a really fun plane to fly. I put a Saito 82 in my arf kit and a 2 blade prop. Believe it or not the plane is not that much faster than the plane with the evelution 46. The Saito 4 stroke sounds and looks so much better and it comes off the ground faster than the 46 but air speed while flying around is not that much different than the 46. I would go with The saito for the sound, Power and reliability IMO.

Hi Tractorman, I still don't have it off the ground yet. I bought a 52 evolution for it, but haven't put it together yet. I'm really enjoying an Avistar and Sapac T45 which I put together for the last couple of months.
Actually....I haven't spent anytime on my heli's lately at all.
Dierwolf - I don't think I have the range (or the flying skills) on the planks!!! I've been severly distracted by some gas RC boats that I bought in June, maybe I can get an extended fuel tank on it and bring them across :)

I know what you mean
I myself have 3 Aeromarine Cats with Quickdraw 25cc engines (Sprintcats) and a Stryker F1 Cat with a 35cc quickdraw in it.
the stryker clocks 92mph.... nothing beats a 25ft long roostertail :)
you should come over some time serious, we have alot of rc boaters here.
Alot of people think RC Heli's and planes are expensive hobbies..... 25cc quickdraw engine alone with Matching pipe costs $1250.00 :) let alone good Hull and the rest of the goodies.

92mph.....................! I have a Aeromarine Avenger Pro and XXX, with Zen's but am running at half those speeds. Great fun, it actually makes me go and enjoy the beach more than I used to. No repairs to worry about, but the engines are given me a nightmare to tune.
I've just put an order in from Bonzi for a MTI twin counter-rotating with modified Zen's. Custom paint job etc... $US3,400. Probably cost another $US500 in tax's and freight to get it to me, but the boats are really nice days out.
I think I have the only RC gas boats here, so it is a bit lonely, but I have just sold an Arrowshark to a buddy. Where do you guys play in St Maarten?

Zenoah are entry level motors, pretty much weedwacker modified motors. Look up some Good J&G motors, but from the forums they say the Zen PUM seems to run pretty good.
All depends on the prop your running, too much pitch or too much lift. what you want is the prop running only 1/2 (half) way in the water.
Tell me exactly which motor you have, with which pipe and what prop your using... I run ABC props myself shaved, cupped and balanced.
certainly dont run 3 or 4 blades, leave that for the riggers and Nitro Heads
Repairs, i guess your not doing over 50mph then LOL, at 92 and blowover your hull is useless
The Avenger runs pretty wet, never liked them, the sprint cats are much much better, only last pad and prop should be in the water.
This will be my next build, brushless power :) GOD KNOWS WHY.... i know coz my quickdraw engines are too load and they run me off the lake all the time:)

Both engines are 260PUM's with 257 carbs. The XXX has a Marine Specialities mod and runs pretty well. The Avenger had a blow over about 2 weeks ago and the rx got buggered. Had it back in the water today, but it just seems to cut out at high speed and doesn't want to idle well and is all over the place. I see a lot of air in the fuel line unless the tank is topped completely. Something also hit the boat today and took a big chuck out of the prop!
You have a LHS in St Maarten? Even for the smallest thing, I need to buy from the US and ship. It is a real pain!
Avenger Pro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP4Enmu3-Xg the cutting out was due to a Duratrex fail safe

I can't seem to see your vid off the site. Comes up with 'Video not available' You have a direct link?

Your boat seems to run ok from that video, try richening both needles, its always best in Boats to run lean (i know in airplane and rc cars/helicopters, people strive for Lean setups for max rpm, its the opposite in boats).
We use Life Water bags down here for fuel tanks (you know the bag of saline water they give you as IV in the hospital) it works great and you get no air and can run it down to the last drop... Check your fuel line / replace it completely from carb to tank weight.
Also no R/C stores here, everything is ordered online. Not a big deal, i have it shipped to miami and its here in a couple days via my consolodator in miami which has 4 flights per week to St. Maarten.

You're right. I took the engine out and got to the fuel tank and the gas line with the clunk had become detached. Tried some brake specialist shops for brass tubing to replace it instead of the loose line, but no luck. I've heard of the IV bag and might try to give it a go.
You're post on the P51 actually prompted me to pull it out of the box and start putting it together today. Unfotunately, I had a few beers and noticed that the engine mounts are the wrong way round.......
Do you use Corrossin X in your electronics and have you had a go with any seaplanes yet? Very tempted to get some floats for the Avistar to break up the boating days a bit.

More into warbirds myself so no no seaplanes... I dont use corrosion X, we make sure our electronics box is very well sealed and always put 2 or 3 condoms over the reciever in case of a blowover.

Dierwolf - Is that you flying the T45 in the Youtube vid? Very nice flying..... I tried it yesterday with mine at about 20ft from the ground inverted and came down hard...... The impact was so hard, that my LiPo is about a 1/3 of it normal size! Have ordered a new one today, hopefully it will be with me soon.
The P51 is finished, but I haven't taken it up yet....too windy. Hope all these hurricanes and storms aren't affecting you guys in St Maarten right now.
