View Full Version : Nitro Newb Mistake...
Rookie move... My Synergy is my first nitro bird. I moved up from a Logo 500.
Second flight yesterday, started the bird, the engine went nuts, the blades tried to turn in my hand, a buddy grabbed the exhaust and pinched it shut...
Learned a very valuable lesson...
Make sure the bird is on before you wake the beast...
Didn't hurt the clutch much, just a little smoke, it only went to about 1/8 throttle. Still very "exciting"...
Glad my buddy was there, I was looking to yank a fuel line.
I will never forget that again.

You got very lucky. You learned that lesson with minimal damage to the heli, AND yourself. Nice. I'll bet you don't do that one again.
I always do a control check before I even think about picking up the starter...

Damn! Be careful with that beast. Always turn on the radio first and then start the engine...I forgot to that a few times and luckily I'm still alive :YeaBaby:

Another good tip is to always keep a hand on a blade grip when starting. I try to stick to a routine and double check everything but inevitably a mistake will happen. Yours is not even just a noob mistake. I have done the same and also started in idle up. That why I always keep a hand on the blade grip.

I think the worse thing I have done is to put it in throt hold then flick it into idel 2, I had a brain fart and forgot I didn't have soft start on a nitro

I almost tried that the other week but luckily the motor was cold and rich and when I hit idle up the motor just died. That's got to kill your nerves for the day.:DOH
Seriously I also make sure I have the right model selected and check the direction of the swashplate to make sure. If the heli is not on you cannot check so think of steps that require other pre steps and you'll have plenty of safe guards.

I started the heli without turning on and checking the electronics.

Yep, this saved me. I have a healthy amount of respect for that rotor disc, and I definitely keep a tight grip when starting.
Flew all weekend last weekend. Didn't do this again hehe.

this is a very good reason why you should always do a pre-flight check of some sort, even if its a basic one making sure the servos are all moving in the right directions, and that all the linkages are ok. And as stated, one hand should always be holding a grip :) I bet you will never do it again though!

Also, i ALWAYS shut the heli down with throttle cut and continue to hold TC until i turn the heli receiver OFF! then i can never start the heli if i don't turn the heli on as the throttle is still in Cut. Saved me more than once. Ron

Routine, Routine, Routine. If that doesn't work then stickers help. I had a model mismatch once, then I put a sticker on my radio that said "CHECK THE MODEL"
