View Full Version : Impressive flying at low speed videos?
Ok:
So I see all these videos of experts doing the impossible at great speeds in the air, but is there some expert demo video of feats being accomplished at low speed? I want to see fine control of a helicopter so post them here if you know of them.

Sounds like you are interested in FAI F3C. It is a style of flying that is all about fine control. Unfortunately, good F3C videos are a harder to find than 3D videos; but they are out there.

As far as I'm concerned, these are the types of pilots with the greatest skill.
Have to agree with your there, TheBum. Those who can do both F3C and 3D at the world class level are the true heli gods.

Some amazing videos. Did you see that autorotation right onto a target circle? Very smooth indeed! Thanks for sharing! -Migs

Very, cool. I think it's harder to try to fly slow.

I agree. Even when flying figure 8s I have trouble doing it slowly.

Agreed. I can easily whip out a 360 turn at 45-degree (or more) bank at high speed. But trying to do simple rudder turns in my back yard kills me every time.
Maybe I need to go back and buy another Honeybee FP heli...

Agree, I tend to fly my 450 on the backyard mostly and it was pretty challenging at first not to plow into the trees, but once I started to get more comfortable with it, its really awesome to be flying around the trees and doing little circuits at 2 feet from the ground, probably like flying low altitude in the jungles of Vietnam with a Huey, avoiding trees and other things...

So guys, why is it harder to do slow? It seems like our reflexes would not be quick enough to overcome the inevitable crash while at high speed! -Migs

Imho slow is harder for two reasons:
1: When you're going slow you're much more concerned with accuracy. It's much easier to spot a mistake or a bad input when the heli isn't whizzing by at mach 3.
2: When you're going fast the heli has lots of momentum, which makes it pretty easy to guess generally which direction the heli is going to go with any given input. When you're moving slowly, a slight bad correction sends you drifting in some direction you didn't expect.

its not the speed that is a issue its all a control issue and they can make most of the really persise moves at a slow speed. we on the other hand practice at a faster clip more often. if you practice going slow you will find its easier and its the persise thing thats hard at any speed.
slow speed is how you learn to do the real persise manuvers. most of the guys doing this are used to flying slow underpowered FP/CP helis.
rcgroups is your friend on this one. that forum is were these guys all hang out. ive seen some impressive footage there. they dont like us full collective 100 flat inverted 3d guys lol and they preach there tight moves.
nothing wrong with that, we have our home here and they have there home there and if you want a good heated debate and like to argue runryder is great lol

I think that at slow speeds, there are more cyclic inputs needed to keep the heli oriented. The faster you go the more "stable" the heli seems. Almost like it flys a bit more like a plank. Kinda the same as when you ride a bike, it is easier to keep it upright when you are moving quickly than when moving slowly. Ever tried to turn in a circle on a bike, while barely moving?

RC Groups, and HeliFreak, have lots of folks that are the same person on both forum (myself included):)
Wow... Now that's what I call flying. Forget that crazy, flip around so fast you can't see what's going on 3D stuff, that smooth, precise flying is totally cool.
Now where does one get a fuselage like the one in the first video?
