View Full Version : question about blade 400
When I fly my blade 400 in the yard, even if the grass is fresh cut, the tail blades catch the grass.
It there anyway to put spacers on the landing gear. It would be nice if I could get the heli to set at least another inch or even 2 inches higher off the ground.
I'm a girl so I have no clue. Would that disrupt the balance? Is there anyreason that wouldn't work.:arggg:

Hi Nan,
Well if you raise it up with the same foot print size it will be easier to tip over but probably not an issue. I use a 1/8” thick piece of plywood, doesn’t need to be real big.

Hi Nan,
Might be better to leave the heli un-modified and either get a piece of scrap carpeting or a mat to takeoff and land on.
Putting some lightweight spacers on is not going to throw your heli off balance or do anything drastic.

But I can't take off and land in the same spot! LOL We have a landing spot but the 400 is so squirrly I just have to set down where I can - which is usually grass. Then I have to move the heli just to take back off again.

try a taller landing gear, or just jack up the back set of gear a little.

When I was flying in the winter with home made skis, I used an elastic band to squeeze the back of the landing gear closer together. It added at least 1" of additional tail clearance.

As for the heli being squirly, you could add some expotential. I have also heard of guys putting wheel collars on the edges of the flybar shaft.

I would recommend going down to the 9t pinion on the motor. It will take the headspeed down to about 2800 which helps tame it down. I replaced the cyclic servo's on mine as well (replaced with hitec 65's0 and those seem to center better which was a big help. Over all get the 9t pinion it so far has made the most dramatic change in the heli.
Also you can put on the Trex tail fin which will raise it enough so you don;t clip the gras as much. I made a new fin out of 1/16 lexan that was about 1/2inch taller . . that worked for me.

try 500 size landing skids
Hi Nan - I fly in fairly deep grass all the time. I have four ping pong balls on somewhat short carbon fiber rods, and I put a slit in another ping pong ball and force it over the bottom of the tail blade. Grass no problem.
I put 2 wheel collars on the end of the flybar up against the paddle. And I use low headspeed to allay my fears. None of the experts like these, only newbies do.

before i could take off and land where i wanted to, i just used larger training gear made from dowels and wiffle balls. i found the wiffle balls to be big enough that the heli almost floated on the surface of the grass and helped me to avoid any catching problems.
Trex 500 landing gear might be what you need.

I agree yk3d. Go with the T-rex landing gear if you want to raise the blade up a little.
Also it will give you a little wider stance and the extra weight will make it a little more stable for you .
Here is a picture of Maxman55 and Otto975d blades with them on and a link to the thread

I live on 6 acres of land/grass and if I keep my flying area mowed short I don't have an issue only when it gets tall.

I agree with the others about the 500 gear.....but I think it makes it look a little.....out of proportion??
I've heard of people using the short Gorilla gear in the front and the long Gorilla gear in the rear. Nose down....tail up.....
