Hi,

I was happy to get my new Zippy 3300 today... I just waited for the wind to calm down.

I take the Hurri out, plug in the first lipo, plug the second and... a little white smoke came out the ESC :(
I take a look a the thing, no apparent damage. I decide to try again... nothing.

Back home, I tried with my other lipos (APlus 2200), and when I plugged the second battery, a big spark and smoke came out the Dean plug. The T plug metal literally melted...

I suppose the ESC is dead... any idea how this could have happened ?!

What do you think... Should I get a CC80 or 85HV ?

Wow....looks like a dead short....takes a lot to melt the metal that way...

Generally the ESC just lets the "magic smoke" come out when it blows....

I would definately check the new Zippy's to ensure they didn't solder the wires incorrectly...causing you to inflict the problem with the first set....then causing the next set to completly blow it...

I am assuming you have recently powered up the esc with your older packs with no problems and have not changed anything since then?

yea i would check to make sure all ur wires hook up right... i have 4 zippy 3300s and they all work awesome, give me plenty of power with 2500 rpm... i use the align 75amp esc

Well... I check with a multimeter. Here are the results for the Zippy's :

Pack #1 is ok.
Pack #2, I have 4.15 on third cell, 4.15 on second cell and... 0 on first cell ! :(

Of course, 0V via the principal plug. (no puffing...)
I charged them earlier this day with no problem, so this must have happened when I plugged them to the ESC.

The Aplus 2200's are fine, just have to change the DeanT.

And yes, I flew the Hurri with the 2 Aplus on Sunday, everything was ok... and I didn't change anything...

The Zippy's are supposed to have a 3 month guarantee...
The question is : do I cut the shrink to see what's going on under there... or do I ask UH if they can do something...?...

(today was a bad day... weather wise, work wise and heli wise...:( should have stayed in bed !)

i would send them a e-mail about it before u start cutting because you could void the warrenty... are these brand new?

maybe the esc is bad because if it was the zippys it wouldnt burn like that with the other batteries

The ESC has a problem, for sure... I will just forget about it and get a new one (Phoenix 80 or 85HV ?! )

Well, I just checked the postal fees from France to Hong Kong... The cheapest is almost the price of the battery so... (international postage from France is really expensive !! never realized that...)
From what I've read on UH faq, it seems they wouldn't do anything anyway, considering I already charged them and plugged them...

for the money the align 75amp is awesome... not sure about the others cause i havent had any experience with them but i run the z30 at 2500 rpm for 6 min and my esc is cool when im done flying... i did mount it on the side frame for more airflow so that probably helps alot

OK, thanks.

I already have a Phoenix on my Dragonus and am very happy with it. I also have the USB castlelink... so another Phoenix would be nice... just easier to set up.
I'll try and find some infos and opinions on the forum...

Edit :
I did the autopsy of the lipo...

This was broken and you can see on the protective tape that it got hot. Did it broke because of a shortcut in the ESC or was it already broken and made the ESC burn ?!... don't know.

I managed to repair the lipo, seems to be fine now.

I wouldn't think the lipo would cause the esc to go unless it was wired incorrecly and even then I'm not sure it could cause our problem. if the circuit ws open it just would't send any voltage at all to the esc....

may have just been a coincidence.

yea because if one cell was bad it would be less volts so it wouldnt make it burn out... i think ur esc just gave up... make sure after you fly its not getting 2 hot cause that could cause some problems

I made some tests...

ESC with motor plugged in : big spark.
ESC without motor : big spark.

I e-mailed Fung and Gaui, got approximately the same answer from both...
Gaui apologize for the problem, ask me to send them the defect ESC and they will send me a new one. :)
Fung just asked if I could send it back for replacement. (we all know Fung is a great dealer but not very comfortable with english language... ;))

I think I'll deal with Gaui... I may be easier, Fung won't have to ask them for a replacement.
Just need to find the cheapest way to send my ESC from France to Taiwan  ...
