Here is small clip of the aerial filming we did for an upcoming National Geographic show on the Green River Killer.
I did the editing for this clip so the final product from NatGeo should look a ton better with someone who knows what they are doing behind the keyboard.
having some issues with flash resizing the video to a very small size, so for now I am stuck with this but I hope to have the 720 version up and running within 24hrs
you can go fullscreen if you can deal with the pixelation

Jaw-dropping Tabb! Did you fly the heli from a car on that road?

Very nice! The part with the fish looks quite good and the water running underneath gives an impression of flying backwards, great!

Really really nice Tabb! They've got some great footage there to pick from!
I loved the part where you kept that fish in the shot as you moved at the speed of the river - was that deliberate (could you see the fish in the downlink)?
Was that flown solo? Looks like you're using one of Jody's mounts?
Well done, thanks for sharing! :D

That's a really awesome clip. Super stable. It's fun to see the shadow in the trees and know that a RC heli is doing this great footage. I can't wait to see it on Nat Geo

Nice video. A polarizing filter may help to make the water look "clean", and make the fish more visable.
I helped make a video some years ago where we put a rope across a stream between two trees, and pulled a camera on a hanging frame, following a trout fisherman as he waded through the water.
That was a very cheap way of getting an aerial shot! The rope needs to have a smooth surface.

Polarizing filter wont work. You would have to have a way to rotate it. The polarization all depend on the direction of the sun. There's usually a little arrow on the rotating barrel and that will point to the sun to get the most out of it.
He wouldn't be able to rotate it. I started to shoot a Thunderbirds airshow and ruined 1,000 pictures because I couldn't hold the camera, zoom, and take the picture all the while rotating that filter.

I've been shooting a lot of water footage lately with the polarizer. You just need to preset it before you take off. Even while shooting hand helds, once you set it, then there is no need to mess with it too much... Unless your lens doesn't have internal focusing.

If the helicopter will be moving left and right, it will change the polarization. I was just thinking and if you're only going downstream (or upstream) then you wouldn't have to mess with it but if you're going back and forth.....it will change because the relationship to the sun will change from going downstream to going up.
Thought to self: lets make a contraption with a servo to automatically rotate it as we watch live view from the shores. That would be awesome

Yup, put me in my place!!!
I'm starting to work on video and seeing stuff like this certainly gives you something to aim for :noteworthy
I've done amatuer video for 20 years and I still battle to convince my wife that 90 seconds of good product usually comes from a dozen (or more) clips / with rework...

That is very true, but I have found that with the clear water in the ocean here, It doesn't make too much difference. It looks very cool, but not natural at all.

It is just a matter of how much movement in relation to the sun there will be

Thanks for the comments guys-
Dpearcy, this is my full time job. The market for this stuff is good if you can reliably provide good footage. Directors tend to be very picky and it is very stressful to keep the ship shooting great video all the time. Takes a ton of tuning and R&D to keep on top of it.
That said I love video projects and the challenges they bring.
I will find out when it will air and let you know
Cheers guys,
Tabb
