Can't figure out how I stripped the front gear without crashing.. In any event, changing this gear would be my first time doing any thing to the 550 (and without having a manual as I bought it used) so here is the question - how hard it is to change this front gear that matched to the motor pinion? BTW, ReadyHeli is out of stock on the manual, is there another source for the manual? Thanks.

changing the gear is easy.. remove the set screws holding the collar.. push the shaft out of the gear and OWB.. slide gear out.. remove the screws from the hub and transfer it to the new gear.. reverse the process to reassemble

as mentioned take out the 2 top allens....no need to take off the bolt on the bottom of the shaft under the OWB....just push the shaft downward and slip out the stripped gear.

Once you have done it the first time.....it takes about 3 mins to get it out....if that long.

You can find the manual online at the Gaui site. Do a Google search for Gaui Hurricane 550.

Changing the front gear isn't hard. Take off the motor mount, loosen the set screws on the front gear hub, put one finger under the OWB and push the shaft down just enough to clear the hub. You can slide the hub and gear out the side. Put a new gear on the hub and do the reverse.

If the OWB shaft falls out, just keep track of the washers and put them back in the right place when you slide the shaft back in from the bottom.

If you stripped the main gear chances are you didn't have the motor pinion meshing tight enough to it. Since getting to the screws holding the motor on the motor mount is a PITA, I came up with a way to get the right mesh every time.

Put the motor in the mount and set the pinion height. Snug both motor screws and back off until the motor just slides in the mount. Put the motor on and slide the motor until it meshes with the main gear. Pull off the motor mount and snug (not tight) which ever bolt is the closest to the main gear. Put the mount back on and twist the motor on the mount until you get the gear mesh right. (You can use a strip of paper or you can do it by feel.) Pull the motor mount off and snug the other bolt. Check the mesh again. If good, pull the motor mount and tighten the bolts. Check the mesh again. If good, you're done.

What you're doing with this method is walking the motor pinion into the gear to set the mesh. It's actually an old RC car trick. Once you learn the feel for good gear mesh, it's pretty easy to do.

Only thing i can think of to add is not to forget some threadlocker on those allen set screws when you put em back in.

Brain fart! Totally forgot about the manufacturer website and just searching for the manual with the online suppliers. Thanks for the tips.

Ben,

If you bought it used then it is worth checking that you have the later gears. The very early 550's had an issue with stripping the gears so Gaui improved them after a few months - the later, improved gears are marked "OK" underneath.

Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks Mike. The heli came with spare parts so I'll check it out ... otherwise I'll order one from Readyheli.

Dont forget to rotate the pinion and the main gear whilst you are trying to set the gear mesh. Most of the time you will find a tight spot and this is where you need to set the pinion mesh as you will put undue strain on the gears and the driveline causing higher amp draws and heat from friction

hope this helps

Ben

Wow! That was easy. Thank you gentlemen. Sorry for the late reply but I've been busy assembling the Rex500 (oops! can't utter that word here).

yeah ya can.we is different on dis thread(banjo music deliverance styles).and a thought....seen plenty of press about static grounding(not the motor or battery) issues.just been looking at a pen that leaves a conductive trail for tidying up circuit boards.wonder if it could be utilized as an easy fix to earth all components in the 500?

So I flew the 550 this morning and after 6 min. of sport flying the batteries were too hot to touch. No 3d just general sport flying and hovering. Ambient temperature was 70*. I'm running stock esc and motor. This is not a problem with the (oops! again) Rex500.

what gearing, what blades, and what batteries....if they are anything less than 20c and that's minimum...you will fry the lipos.... The stock motor is an amp hog...and which stock motor...the 890 or the 1100?

I don't know the pinion on the motor, which is 1100. All other gears are stock. FP Evo25 2500mAh 25C.

yea on the z20 my batteries were bearly warm and on the z30 after 6 min of 3d flight their bearly breakin 100 degrees when its 90 outside

Count the teeth....you might want to go down ..if your not running a 13th you might want to...or else go up to a 50t on the first gear....those lipos should easlily handle the general flying if geared correctly.....unless you have some other binding...and as said...the Gaui motors are known to use a lot of amps.....but too hot to the touch is not acceptable.
