The 2mm gap is normal with the plastc boom clamp.
I just installed my plsatic clamp and what I did, I installed the clamp around the boom first, loosened a couple screws to pry the frames apart just enough to slip the whole assembly in. I also backed out my rudder bellcrank screw just a tad, then re tightened it once the plastic clamp and boom was installed.

I posted the very same topic on the avantrc.com forum last night. The manual doesn't give any direction regarding installing the boom so I've been trying various things with no luck yet. I did try taking out the boom clamp but I couldn't get the whole boom-with-clamp assembly to slide back between the frames (the bellcrank blind nut gets in the way) although I didn't try loosening any of the 8 tail drive bearing block bolts to allow more frame flex. I guess that will be my next strategy.
Instead of permanent plastic nubs inside the boom clamp, a couple of short, 2.5mm bolts going through the side of the boom clamp would make things much easier. Then you could just slide the boom into the boom clamp, line up the holes using the windows that are already cut into the frame at that location, and install the two bolts to hold the boom in position. Then just tighten up the clamp.

What Jason describes above worked for me as well. Thanks Jason. In addition to loosening the tail drive bearing block bolts (8), I also loosened the two bolts that hold the rear side of the gyro plate to the frames. This gave me a good deal more flex in the frames and the whole boom/boom-clamp assembly slid right in. To clear the bell crank blind nut just angle the boom to the left so the left leading edge of the boom clamp comes away from the frame as you push it in. Once the leading edge is clear it slides right in. Also, make sure to loosen that bell crank bolt so it's not sticking out past the inside of the blind nut, otherwise it will dig into the boom clamp and hang things up. Hope this helps.
