View Full Version : just maiden'd, OS 50 question

So I just maidened my 600n after a two day build... definitely the most awesome model I've ever built. My experience with the 450 prepared me really well for the 600, apparently, because it didn't even need trimming... :)
I ran 3 tanks through it, and I suspect the flights were on the order of 3-5 minutes... but my needle valve is only about 1 and 1/4 turns out. It's still making plenty of smoke and my gut feeling tells me it's running pig rich, but seeing as how the manual says 1.5 turns, this seems a little odd. Is it normal for the sweet spot to be only about a turn out from closed on these engines? I have a good sense for 'real' engines but I don't think I can trust myself with the little ones... and I don't want to throw away $200.
I also touched the crankcase bottom after all three flights and it was quite warm but definitely not uncomfortably so. What do you guys think... should I keep on turning?
edit: and in case anyone is curious about my setup...
AR7000
Align voltage regulator w/ FP 2100 mAh pack
G770/DS8900G
S9452s on cyclic
S9257 on throttle
CY 50 'muscle pipe'
and a Multigov which I will put in at some point in the future when I am comfortable with the way the engine is running.

You should have had it at least 1 1/2 turns out from full closed for the break in. If your tanks only lasted 5minutes, I'd say it was quite lean. Most people are running about 1 1/4 (give or take) turns after breakin. Of course, this is usually on 30% nitro. What percent are you running? Hope you didn't damage it.

It looks like I'm at about 1 1/4 turns out right now. I did start at 1.5 turns but it was bogging horribly, which I interpreted as a sign that it was running super rich.
Doesn't running rich use up fuel faster than lean? (rich being more fuel per unit air) I took the low flight times as a sign that I was far too rich, and as I leaned it out the times increased.
I am quite sure I haven't damaged it, at least.

I think you meant quite rich. A lean running engine will go longer on a tank because less fuel is being used. 5 minutes definitely would fall into the rich category in my experience. When I have mine tuned pretty well, I get about 8-minute flights.
squeaky: You didn't answer the percent nitro question. The lower the nitro percentage, the leaner the engine needs to run. I run 30% and have my needle around 1-1/4 turns out.

Thanks a lot, man. I am running (I think) 15% nitro, so I guess super lean is fine.
Related to this is the question of how many % nitro should I be using? I am totally clueless when it comes to these things... does more nitro = more power?

After break in I was around 1 1/8 out and she ran pretty good, but I seemed to chase the needle alot to keep it where I like it. Bottom plate at around 98 head around 200. I just sold the pipe and bought a Hatori BW
and it seemed to tune easier and did give more power then installed a Carbsmart and seen her perform like I never thought possible. I personally did not like the MP5, just a thought If later you can't get it how you want it get a Hatori.

Do you find that the Hatori requires a richer needle setting? I had to richen my mixture quite a bit when I went from an Align pipe to a Hatori BW.

yes, thats what I meant. Thanks for correcting me. I'm at somewhere between 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 turns and getting a 9 minute flight. Of course that is draining the main tank and just starting off the header. 30% nitro. Sometimes the back plate feels hotter than usual, but I think that is somewhat due to outside air temp. I'm beginning to see the benefit of those carbsmarts. Of course, my mild flying style may not benefit from it at all.:dontknow

I have a CarbSmart on hand, but it's still not in the heli. I want to make sure my crankcase is still usable after my last crash before putting on the CarbSmart.

I had to richen it up Quite a bit compared to my MP 5. I just installed a carbsmart this week. Going to head out to the field here in a little bit and fine tune it, but the Hatori seems to me to tune easier and produce more power. I just wish it came with a polished finish.
