Guys,
I am looking to replace the DS821 that I am currently using as a tail servo with something a little better but still in the $50 - $60 price range. I am only starting on circuits etc. so it does not have to be absolutely top quality, but a bit better than my DS821 as a tail servo - suggestions please ? ......
Cheers,
Mike.

What gyro are you using on that heli Mike?

hey mike i'm using one of those new hyperion programable metal gear tailservo's same as wazzer. seems all good so far. doesn't need a step down and its 0.06 at six volts. at under $50 nz it seems a lot of servo for the price.......

I'm using the Gaui GU210 (which seems to work fine)

Thanks Marco - I was thinking about one of those, a 9650 or 3151 initially.

Mike.

Im not sure a 9650 will have the torque required for the larger heli especially without any type of chinese weights.
It way work well but how long will it last?

The 9650 works very well on the tail. With 6v its fast and strong enough to fly hard 3D. LGT2100 + S9650 is a nice combo and it safes a lot of weight.

i have been using one of these from BP hobbies for about 7 months and it works great. it's rated for 6v and I think speed is .08 or .09 at 6v... works great so far with my 401....and I just ordered another one for my cf frame. fast and centers good....
They have had it on closeout for quite a while.....they are made by Hobby electonics...

Thanks Marco,
I leaning that way at the moment - I liked the look of the HDS-277 that Mike suggested as well, but BP don't ship to the UK unfortunately.

Mike.

their not to bad bro. took mine apart(can't help myself its a bugger) and they seem well made.got one sacrificial plastic gear. and if you can get your hands on one of the usb interface things you can set their travel limit from zero to something like 180 degrees which sorts out having to set it with your gyro. and set the pulse rate specific to your radio gear. pretty sure the center is adjustable as well so you can have full travel both ways if your tail slider is off center at neutral.and their CHEAP

OK, based upon Marco and Ben's recommendations (and the fact that I couldn't find people to ship the HDS-277 to the UK). I've just ordered one of the DS20GMD's and the programming jobbie (don't you just like gadgets like that :YeaBaby:).
Thanks for recommendations.

Mike.

Hey Mike
Good choice, hope it works as well for you as it has done for me

I had a quick play about with the servo and software tonight - the software allows you to do things like change direction of rotation, speed of response, dead zone width, centre position, and most usefully (IMHO) to set the travel limits in each direction.
My plan is to install the servo in the tail and then using the software set the limits of travel such that the servo will travel to it's extremes without binding or trying to move the pitch slider too far. I might do it tomorrow if I have time - or I may just go flying :fly:fly:fly

Mike.

I wasn't able to go rowing this morning so decided to fit my new servo and try it out. I really like the way that you can use the software and programmer to set up the travel - I put a piece of tape on the rudder rod and on the boom to show the previous neutral point then made a note of the gyro settings (so that I can easily put the old one back on if necessary). I put a similar length servo arm to the current one on the new servo and then connected it all up to my laptop with the programming software loaded - I had to change the rotation of the servo to match that of the current one (I could have simply reversed in Tx but want to keep the same settings) using the software I then played about with the servo travel to get to the point where at the extremes of the servo movement there was still a tiny amount of movement left before the pitch slider reached it's limits of movements. I reset the gyro settings to 100% travel and no delay and the servo moves very smoothly and quickly.
So I took it to the field and had a quick fly - I'm very pleased with it. The tail movement is much smoother, less jerky, I was able to up the gain by about 25%, and increase the turn rate and it is still smooth.
Marco and Ben - thanks for the recommendation - it seems like a great success :thumbup::thumbup:

Mike.

Hey Mike
Glad you like it as much as i do
I am always pleased when i find an alternative to the norm that is both cheaper and has advantages, Marco was also the one who encouraged me to make the plunge.
I think i will aslo be upgradeing my cyclic servos to the HP-DS20FMD so i have a full set all programable with the software, When funds allow of course.
Happy flying
