Ron,

Here are the pictures of the replacement bearing. Notice the ball cage. That was not teh material that fell out of mine.

Ron,

I called Wren this morning and boy am I glad I did. In speaking to Roger about the bearing, I found out it doesn't make any difference which way it goes. Then when we discussed the seal being too big he said that I had an older gear box and I need a new pinion gear with the larger shank. Apparently the pinion gear I have causes that bearing to be damaged and then fail. Wren is sending me out a new pinion to take care of the problem. He said that I would probably just damage the new bearing if I didn't change out to the new size. So I'll wait for the new pinion gear before re-assembling.

The new style gear box does not carry a seal because it is spray lubricated and apparently they have the larger pinion so all's good.

I also walked through the re-assembly steps to make sure I'm putting everything back where it belongs. They certainly give good customer service.

Sounds like I need to see a picture when this is completed to see if I have the OLD pinions in both my engines

Wouldn't doubt but what both yours are the small pinion too .. as I don't think they started the fuel spray lube line until sometime just middle of last yr .
Lou ...
Wrens service is really great ,,, next to Bergen only ... I have had Sara and Roger call me on their personal time /phone at about 9:00 their time to talk me through a problem I created .Now that is service above and beyond the call of duty .:banana:clappp:noteworthy

I have a fuel bleed off line that goes to the bottom of the xmsn's

Ron and Larry,

If I understand this correctly the pinion shank was changed before they went to spray lubrication. It is easy to tell if you have the smaller gear if you get the gear box apart. The shank on the smaller pinion is 12mm while the newer version is 14mm. I know that you probably don't want to tear down the gear box, but that's the way you tell.

If you haven't had any failures, you are probably fine. Roger said that my gear box is a early version and that's why it had the smaller pinion. I would also assume that if you ever sent the gear box in for service they switched the pinion out.

The new ones drizzle the fuel / oil mix over everything from the top ,,if I remember right when Chris showed me the first one he had ... Mine is on its way from Wren as we speak and then I will know for sure and can take some exterior pix for you (not going to touch it fresh from the factory updated and all ) .
Sara hopefully may jump in here soon or Chris and maybe can confirm either way .

FYI
You can have an ECU causing troubles with the turbine run ... the old idea that it either works or doesn't ,,,was proved wrong by mine :arggg: ( my motto ,,if something can go wrong ,,,it will go wrong with mine :DOH:bawl)

My new ,, fresh last yr fuel pump was also causing some troubles too .... now maybe my bird will fly as good as it did the first yr I had it .

So which shaft is 14mm the driven large pinion or the input gear from the turbine

Ron,

You have a ring and pinion gear in the gear box. The ring gear and shaft are fine. It's just the pinion gear I'm talking about. If you hold the pinion gear in your hand measure the diameter of what I call the shank (smooth portion behind gear). If it's 14mm you are fine. If it's 12mm you have the smaller gear and that needs to be replaced. The input shaft that carries the power turbine and that the pinion is bolted to is fine.

Larry,

It will be good to see you back in the sky with your turbine.:YeaBaby: Yours was the first turbine I ever saw. It was at the Michiana fun fly. Well I really didn't get to see it fly, but you spooled it up a bunch of times. :P

Bad throttle curve if I remember. Hope to see you soon. I assume you will be at IRCHA?

Well , we thought it was a bad throttle curve ,,but that was the start of my problems with the ECU I believe ....
any how ,,yep I am hoping to be at IRCHA ... but the way this yr is going as far as time ,,,that will be up to fate :badair:

Whether the turbine will be there or not is another question that will be up to fate ... I am just now getting my E Bergen back together from a motor switch and winter check .:DOHStill have to get the curves figured out on this nue motor
