View Full Version : MicroHeli Tail Problem

This follows on from 'Tail Bounce Slide Thing' by Sirwallis and Crabfu's CF tail bearing problem.

I posted earlier about finding my CF tail plates oval'ed out and fixed them with CA... which does seem to have worked for me to. However i pulled out my MicroHeli tail that i bought a few weeks ago but chickened out on fitting till i got a little better. I opened it up and assembled it with a new tail shaft and found the following 2 problems.

1. There was only 1 tiny brass washer to fix the Tail Pitch slider arm to the tail rotor blade grip. 1.5mm x 2.5mm x 0.3mm... Not a huge issue and could have been worked out.

2. The Brass Slider and Tail Pitch Slider Hub do not rotate arround a common axis! Basicaly the aluminium part of the pitch slider wobbles as it rotates on its bearings, unfortunatly a whole lot worse.

I found this by holding the whole tail assembly inverted and spining the tail shaft; the bell crank arm just exagerated the problem and the brass ball osscilated back and forth by about 1mm!! On closer inspection it turned out that the Brass Slider in the center on the pitch slider assembly was poorley machined and fitted inside the bearings.

Hope you guys follow this description, video of the bell crank arm wobbling back and forth as the tail shaft spun would have made this really easy, anyway pictures below... looks like a shipment back to MH. Am i just unlucky with parts or just scrutinize them closely?

I was about to order one of these MH tails from HeliDirect!! Now Stoatnchips has got me scared out of it:( However, Buzzkill says they are great -- and he is never, ever wrong;)

So, what to do??

My tail twists (on the boom) when I go high revs and makes getting back to the ground in one piece about a 9.5 on the pucker scale. Of course I've tightened the mounting screws to the breaking point -- no better.

If anybody has any better idea than an MH tail, please tell me.

LMAO !!! If you ask me I'm never wrong ;) I think I just got lucky.

Honestly, I'd get the TT instead. The price is about the same and you can get replacement parts for the TT. Besides, you get a lot more for your money with the TT. Best upgrade I've done so far. My other two Gaui's wil be recieving the MH tails soon as I have one in a parts box after playing with the stock tail and another that was on the now TT 200. I prefer the TT over the MH tail and the MH tail over the stock.

Next, I'm gonna replace the stock TT tail components with the MH parts that will fit. Should be the best yet (I hope).

TT = Torque Tube = SD = Shaft Drive - in Gaui language. :)

Gene.. i think i'm just unluky so don't get worried by my experience. If you do get one though, make sure you Loctite EVERYTHING!! There have been a couple of sorry posts about MH tails blowing themselves to pieces but if i remeber right they were not Loctited. Has everyone spotted the new MH option for the 200? Its just a better tail rotor Hub and grips but should work very well on the TT.... at only $21 is a bargin too. I think you may wnna replace the Brass Ball Links with some stock steel though.

Thanks - now it all makes sense. I've been seeing the shaft drive parts. Didn't know they were known as TT.

Would I be dissing my belt drive Harley if I had a shaft drive Gaui?!?:dontknow

Welll nowww, I used to have a BMW -- shafts are boring, never need attention, seldom break -- no excitement there, is there??

On HeliDirect under the parts selection they show the 200SD. Whats the difference in the plain 200. Also, they don't show any TT stuff except in the 200SD section. And while I'm at it (that is, showing my ignorance), whats this "long boom" about? Do I need a "long boom"? I kinda like the length of my own boom to tell the truth...it reaches all the way back to the tail rotor nicely.

Torque Tube is the same as Shaft Drive... so TT is the same as SD, just different people call it different things!
The Long Boom is standard on the 200. Looking back at the development of the EP100, it got to the pro version (like revision 3)... then Gaui added a Longer tail Boom and blades and called it a EP200. So as far as your concerened, you'll always use the long version.

ReadyHeli has all the Gaui 200 parts. They list them in a very essy to understand and browse format. You can filter by newest, price and so on. I get my stuff there and it may help clear the confusion of mixed ep100 and 200 parts on a lot of sites. Plus they just simply kick ass

Yeah, I send a nice portion of my income to ReadyHeli, HeliDirect, Amain, HSW, and a few others.
I will take a look at the boom/tail stuff again on ReadyHeli.
Buzz, don't mention it to any of the Gaui guys but I just ordered a T-Rex 450 SE V2. I'm sweating a little about it since I am such a hoover (not hover) only guy. [I hoover helis - meaning that I have to vacuum all the parts up after I'm finished.]:wow2:

Seriously, my wife says I must be the best hoverer in the country since that is all I have done for months and months. I actually did several orbits with the B400 one day and was so excited that I splattered it.

You'll love the T450. Great heli. Only advice, don't hover inside ;)

My wife doesn't let me hover inside - she likes walls just like they are.

Only time I've been scared flying a RC heli is with my 500. Nose in, FFF 3+ lbs. heli coming right at me with 2600 rpm 425mm CF blades of death put a whole new meaning to "shaky fingers" and "pucker factor". :P

As an update, i have just recieved my replacement tail unit from Microheli in Vietnam... just over 2 months in total!! To be fair, the first 5 weeks was getting through the language barrrier for an RMA number and trying to explain i did not want to "Buy" spare parts, i wanted to get a warranty repalcement!!! I do not have a spare tail shaft at the moment so i can't tell if this one is ok or not. I'll update if there are more issues...immediatley after my 5 minute tantrum, torrent of profanities and verbal abuse aimed at MH.
