Anyone running phoenix on linux? I'm getting ready to switch my home pc to a fedora distro and just curious if anyone's been successful getting it to run under wine? I'm assuming that'd probably be the only way to run it.

I couldnt get it to run under wine, but I would be interested if you get it going and if so, how.

I have tried under SUSE, Ubuntu and Xanros distro. I'd love to dump windows for good on all my PCs and the day is coming ever closer. Phoenix is the only ap that makes me still run a windows installation.

With so many people using other operating systems, I sure hope that Runtime consider providing support at some point.

I wouldn't bet on it. They've made heavy use of DirectX, which does not translate well to non-Windows operating systems. Parallels running under OS X does a decent job of emulating it, but there's a noticeable roughness to it and some of the features (soft shadows and antialiasing, to name two) are not supported.

It would have been nice if they could have used OpenGL and other open standards from the beginning, but we're stuck where we are and there's little incentive for Runtime to rewrite large portions of the application to support other OSes, with still at least 85% of potential users running Windows.

The thing is, most people think that percentage is going to change within 5 years. Its pretty short sighted IMHO to write an ap for a single platform in this day and age, still Runtime are by means alone in that choice. ;)

Dont forget though that microsoft are making some effort to recognise other operating systems at last, so one day DX could be available on other platforms.

For me, £300 for slo windows or free fast linux is no hard choice!

On that point, I agree whole-heartedly.

Unfortunately, PC gaming is the one area where MS definitely rules the roost. They're not going to give that up without a fight. In areas where they're starting to slip, they'll do whatever they have to do to regain market share, even if it means sleeping with the enemy. The only thing we can hope for is an open rebellion against MS with regard to PC games and that starts with the developers. There are already cross-platform graphics engines available such as Unity that developers can take advantage of. Porting DirectX is not the way to go because it's too tightly coupled to Windows.
