So I just started training myself in the art of shooting autos with my bone stock R50. I start off pretty close to the ground (about 6 feet) and work my way upwards as my courage permits. My highest auto was from about 15-20 feet up. Heli came down pretty fast and kinda bounced up and floated back down. Didn't break or bend anything, thankfully. Is the timing of the flare portion of the auto way off or am I doing something else wrong? When I do them -10 feet off the deck I can float the heli down nicely. Any higher and I get that bounce.

I am currently using Fun Key 600mm composite blades.

I think there's a range where your too high for the headspeed to hold and not high enough to get negative collective in. :)

Try them from forward flight they work better.

Are you trying these using normal flight mode? If so, when at the 20 foot hight, try using idle up 1, this way when you hit the throttle hold you will (should) have a higher head speed.

When you hit throttle hold, what happens imediatly to the heli? Does it gain altitude prior to loosing? This is robbing head speed, either anticipate this and drop your collective when you hit the switch or adjust your pitch curve for throttle hold.

And what ghtracey said if this doesn't help.

Probably get the same answers you got on RCU. Yes hovering autos from 10 feet or more are not easy.

I'm in normal mode during these sessions. Soon as I hit the O.S.S. (Oh Shizzle Switch) the tail will travel 15-30 degress clockwise. This would indicate to me that my headspeed is quite low.

I haven't gotten around to adjusting my headspeed becuase I have no idea what it currently is. I only know that I am at 70% throttle midstick with about 4degrees of pitch. On my T-Rex450 I run 80% throttle at midstick, I wonder if I can runt the Raptor this way too.... I got composite blades ONLY because I was afraid the woodies would explode midflight.

If you have a a friend with a aircraft tach you can check your HS the cheaper way. Duct tape it to the horizontal stab, set it for 2 blades and spool up to where the heli gets light... hover headspeed should be pretty close to that.

For a Rappie 50, 5.5* of pitch should give you a headspeed of approximately 1550 (from the manual). I set mine up like this and that is very close to the HS I get.
