Heli noob

Hello Gents

I'm a complete noob when it comes to heli's, I have some exp with fixed wing, but this is my first venture into heli's.

I have done allot of reading and followed the setup videos (great work by the way) and I think I知 just about there, well I think so.

But there are a few things that I知 still not sure about.

I have a pitch gauge but I知 not sure that I using it correctly? The reason that I知 not 100% about is that I do not seam to be able to get the blades to track perfectly. Also when trying to hover the heli always wants to drift backwards and to the left.

Now I understand that it will want to go left as it lifts but I seam to be having to put quite allot of right stick to counter it. I have check the swash plate and it looks level, all my trims are at 0 and servos are centred with the links at 90 degrease, the tail seams to holding steady so I think I have to gyro set up correctly with no tail wag.

Also sorry if this has been covered else where but with regards to a HH gyro are they better than a normal one, I知 not looking to do 3D stuff (well not yet anyway) but I just want to make sure that I have got it set up correctly as I知 leaning and if a HH gyro would help then I値l look into getting one.

Oh might help if i told you what heli i have got

It is a e-sky belt cp, and i'm using a Futaba 9c Tx

Many thanks and any advise would be great.

Al

Im a newbie too, but Ill try and give some advise...

Pitch (my way)
I set the pitch guage on the blade & center stick on radio, put radio where u wont bump it (throttle hold ON)
set the pitch guage to 0, then using the link from the blade grip to the mixing arms, adjust to get the top edge of the pitch guage parallel with the flybar.

If 1 turn of the control link is too much, one turn on the link between the mixing arm & the swashplate is equal to about 1/2 turn on the blade grip link.

when you have it set, go to the other blade & repeat.

I have also found that if I get 0 degrees spot on, and have a straight feathering shaft, my blades track just great

Hope that was some help..

The Belt CP uses the same gyro as my King had. I changed mine to a cheap telebee HH and I find the tail stays locked much better. If money is not a problem then I would get a Logitech 2100 or many be the Hitech one. Just my thought from another Newb.

On the bench, hold the cyclic in roughly the position that works and look at the swash to see if it looks more level than when you don't hold the cyclic in that position. It may be that the swash isn't really quite level. Also check the balance, your heli might be tail heavy.

Regarding tracking, check the paddles and make sure they are parallel to one another. If not, one will ride high and it will pull one of the blades high with it.

The method I use to check the swash plate levelness is to remove the mixing arms and head assembly - leaving the swash plate in place, I then either zip tie or rubber band a normal allen wrench to the main shaft. I center the swash to center stick, and then rotate the center shaft using the main gear to see how level the swash plate really is. Not being perfect level probably accounts for your slight backwards motion and possibly your leftwards drift. I check my swashplate for levelness at high, mid and low stick positions. I then reassemble the head and adjust mid stick for 0 degrees on both rotor blades. If you have a pitch curve at something other than 0 degrees at center stick, consider making your adjustments using idle up and go forward from there.

It's not that unusual to have tracking issues when setting up the pitch. The idea is to get them generally as close as you can. After that, put a piece of tracking tape on one blade or if you have two distinct colors, a different color on each rotor blade end. Hover the heli and note which one is high or which one is low ( does not matter which way you choose. ) Shutdown the heli.On your chosen blade ( insert color here ), on the bell mixing arm ( it is connected to the rotor blade ), choose the long rod on the other side of the bell mixer, and adjust the ball link either in or out- noting direction turned. Adjust only 1 turn at a time. Fire it back up. If tracking has improved and is dead on- leave it. If tracking is better, but need adjustments still, apply adjustments to the same rod in the same direction. If tracking is worse, adjust the ball link on the same rod two turns in the opposite direction. Check your tracking again and repeat until tracking is good. Be sure that when you are done that there is enough rod in the ball link.

You can also do this tracking adjustments without tracking tape- just mark a blade, make an adjustment one way ( let's say clockwise ), check your tracking, if it is better or worse, adjust accordingly- but always adjust the same blade. Adjust one turn at a time till it is good, and undo a bad adjustment by reversing at one or two turns at a time.

If you were quite close with your pitch gage, you should be done within 1 to 4 tries. If you are further out, you might want to redo everything and possibly get some help.

Also note on some heli's, it is possible to turn the ball links and assemble them in only one particular way - meaning that your adjustment can only be one complete turn at a time. Other heli's are not that picky, and allow you to make adjustments at 1/2 a turn at a time.
