one of my friends called yesterday saying he and his son were going to a new rc car track in san clemente, and that i should meet them there with my helicopter. so for this vid, i had someone holding the camera! always rules to get it back in one piece. one of these days i am going to try idle up. i hate coming down from higher altitude because lack of headspeed.

wow nice flying huligan, those were very smooth looking f8's you were doing.

Nice flyin for sure:thumbup: I went into idle up on my 16th flight and found that it wasn't as intimidating as I thought it would be and decided that I would only fly in idle up from then on, I had my first crash on my 17th flight, but that was due to lack of space, so I say go for it cause it looks like you have good control of that thing and you will be amazed at how well it handles with the extra headspeed:YeaBaby:

hey thanks for the nice flyin comments! i honestly think that was the best battery that i've put through my heli so far. glad there is a video record of it.

jay are you hitting the idle up switch in the air or just before it gets light right before liftoff? the only experience i have with idle up is when i flipped the switch on my friends axe cp. the heli went instantly out of control, and i had to replace a bunch of parts on my friends heli.

Puttin me to shame :(

Hey dont be intimidated.....I start up in idle up......throttle hold on, plug in batt, wait for the beep, timer, throttle hold off, wait for 15 secs (full speed) and fly......REALLY helps coming down especially when a tad windy......

If you dont feel comfy my way, just make sure your top 3 pitch and throttle curves match in norm and idle up and you should notice a diff when flicking the switch.

I've been lifting off, maybe 2 or 3 feet off the ground and then hitting the switch. The first time I did it I was thinking that it was going to go ape s&*t, but all it did was twitch ( torque movement ) and then it settled down and hovered as usual just with a higher head speed. I was really nervous the first time, to be honest it was the only time that I have ever gotten the shakes while flyin ( and they were bad ) but I was really excited to find how stable and consistent it flew. :YeaBaby:I have video of it cause I figured if there was ever a time that I was gonna crash, it would be during my first idle up. I'll post it as soon as I can figure out how, but in the mean time my advice would be to bust a Nike and " Just Do It " make sure to do it in an open area though just to be on the safe side and good luck:thumbup:

another parctice you can do if you feel you tail in and side hover is good

first practrice
hover fwd 10-20 feet stop and fly it back tail in
(will help you get the fwd momentum and stoping and rearward flight)

another you would be fy fwd off to you side then bing back tail in
turn and fly out the other way and return tail in

will teach you turn your head and look at it in diffrent perspevtives and to turn with the tail

after a bit you will be able to go out come back and go with no hesitation

i was doing that too sokal, then i added going to the right and making a turn to the left until back in front then back same to the left, next step for me i think is a full curcuit. just still too scared to do it yet

depends on the type tail turns or bank turns(coordinated turns)

you can do the hovering tail in square

then the tail turn square

coordinated turns will need you to bank, pull in a lil elev, reduce collective, and follow the turn with alil tail input. then level out and keep fwd cyclic and raise collective.

get a few runs in the sim so you will get the stick motions in your head and you will do ok

yeah i was talking coordinated turns, i'm going slow doing sort of a snake turn just to keep the tail sort of towards me, helps keep orintation so i don't fly it into the dirt.

give you some buffer room and go for it fear is our biggest enemy but once you do it.
it will become less intimidating
if you get lost return it to tail in and recover
that was my safety return to a comfortable position to breath then try again

thanks for the pointers sokal, hopefully i can get past the point where i am scared and just get it done. i'm almost to the point of not caring if i crash i just need to try.

ok, you convinved me. im going to try idle up today if i can get to the ballfields. i think the part im most worried about with idle up (other than the more serious sounding head speed) is the idea of remembering to hit throttle hold if/when the heli hits the ground. i try to practice it on the sim, but after a while in the sim i ALWAYS end up getting lazy and forgetting to hit it after impact.

I hit TH as soon as I turn my Tx on and every single time I land the heli whether I need to or not and at this point it's just second nature, so just start reminding yourself to do it and after a while you won't even need to think about it

i have myself trained to keep TH on whenever the heli is plugged in and not flying. it's the reaction time getting to TH before, during, or right after the point of impact that worries me.

so i just got back from the park in my neighborhood (my newest flying spot) and i tried idle up for a minute or so. i hovered around over the basketball court and everything was fine. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN i did a minor overcorrection and bumped the throttle a little... had a few moments of panic where i was very unstable just above the ground trying to recover back into a hover, and finally i gave it a little throttle and hopped it up to about 20ft where i regained control (barely because my left thumb was shaking so badly on the throttle).

to make things worse i was also panicking because i wasn't sure where the idle up button was, so i hit the trainer switch a couple times trying to get out of idle up which i finally did. i landed, disconnected the battery and took a walk around the park to calm the nerves.

when i got back i finished out the battery in normal mode with no nerves. at least im finally losing my nerves in normal mode! never thought that was going to happen.

ahhh... the trials of being a rookie!

ps. the transition between normal mode and idle up was smooth. i'm sure it could be done in the air with no problem. when i went back into normal mode, the heli did not jump or drop.

much more successful than when i tried idle up on an axe cp.

Yeah, when I went idle up with my Pro it was a horrific scene which is why I was nervous just like you. Congrats on trying it for the first time:thumbup: but now you see why the extra space is needed, my second idle up flight ended with a crash into my own truck, DOH!!!:arggg: and was caused by a small error that put the heli to close to the basketball pole which made me over correct etc. etc., so had I been in an open space....... I would be flyin right now instead of watchin Sokals vids

thanks and yes, space is a good thing with idle up. i wont be doing idle up again till im at the soccer fields. there isn't much room at the local park. sucks that my nerves are getting the best of me, but i know its definitely time to land when i can see my shaking on the heli.
