Hey guys what pinion are you using for this motor.( sonix 3550kv) i got the 13 t rhino and it sits to low in the main gear. The online store i bought it from recomended using a 13t pinion. Not necessarly a rhino, just a 13t pinion. Is that correct tooth pinion. Is there another pinion i should use.

Another thing also, i just bought that motor and a new esc thinking my eksy motor bit the dust. The problem was i wasn't getting near enough head speed. I checked for binding everywhere, including the bearings, tail, main gear and so on. After putting in the new motor and esc same problem. Could it possibly be the tx(stock esky). Just fishing for ideas, my heli's been down for awhile,im really gettting frustrated.

Oh and then to top off my problems i stripped the lock nut that holds the pinion. The fun never ends.

Sonix if bought from cnchelicopter.com comes with 13 tooth.

This is the one i have and yes it sits low and the gear touches the curved part of the pinion.

Solution, put pinion as high as possible on shaft and shim motor up with 2 washers between the motor and the motor mount. Problem solved.

where are you knobs at the top the TX??? 13 tooth should give you some very good headspeed. but again if your pitch is way off and too much it will always lift before the headspeed gets up to par.

I'm thinking of getting one of these motors, but have read somewhere that the screws from a stock motor don't fit? how did you fit yours? and what size washers did you use?

Thanks in advance Ian.

Well funny you should just ask, as i just got done with putting it in. A little more moding than i thought i'd have to do. If more people are using this motor i think we ought to make it into a sticky. No the esky screws do not line up with the right holes. To make it work with the motor mount just get some 2.5by 8mm screws. I got mine at my lhs. Also the pinion on the sonix is larger than the esky motor so i had to groove the slots that you use to attach the motor mount with farther up so that the pinion dosen't bind with the main gear. And finally the pinion itself sits down to far in the main gear. What i did was groove the flat part of the motor shaft farther up so that i could move the pinion where i needed it. Now deirwolf mention he just used a washer to allow the pinion to sit up farther. I tried it with a 1 mm washer ,wasn't enough. so tried it with 2mm washer , made my screws to short and i partial stripped out some of the threading. So if you do it that way make sure your screws are long enough. It didn't take much to strip it. Hope this helps because i wish i had known or asked about it before i started.

I shimmed the motor using the races from the blade grip bearing (you know the 2 halves) thats what i used and worked fine along with mounting the pinnion as high as it could go without touching the motor base.

Also when i ordered mine from cnchelicopter.com it came with the correct screws, dont know where you guys
are ordering but the guys at cnchelicopter really know what they are doing and provide you with the right stuff you will need to get the job done.
