There is a lot of talk about safety while charging these packs. Lets talk about safety while transporting the packs. I routinely travel with my machines. What are everyone's thoughts on flying on aircraft with these packs?? Is there any possibilty - other than shorting the leads - that the packs can have an incident on their own??

We operate a privately owned bizjet - this is the primary means of transportation. But....I'd like to bring the ION to some events this season on the airlines.

Lets hear some factual input.

i have never heard of a LiPo spontaneously combusting. incidents i know of have occured during either charging, flying, or shortly after a crash. i think you're pretty safe carrying them on a plane. sorry, don't have any hard facts for you, but i doubt you're going to find any here.

only problem with the brick fire box is that traveling with it on the airplane would be kind of expensive :) Also I bet you would get a bunch of questions at the field about it.

As for transporting the batteries on airlines.. well I bring my lithium powered lap top onboard all of the time. I do see the pack as a possible hazard, but there are a lot of hazards onboard the airplane all of the time. Frankly I am glad the baggage bin is fire resistant and we carry good halon fire suppression equiptment on board. Just as long as they do not load oxygen tanks in there we should be ok ;)

I have taken my Lipos directly on board with me on several occations...right through all the security stuff, I just explain that they are expensive hi tech batteries, they have a look see and pass me through...try that with a gallon of nitro. I carry them in a foam padded fishing reel case...no sweat.

I am new to LIPOLY, what type of charger are you using and where do you get them.

i have a couple of astro 109s. they're good chargers, for the money, but they are pretty hard to find these days. i don't know where you might find one in stock right now.

if you're new to LiPos, i would suggest reading up as much as possible on them, before you get some. they are really truly dangerous, and if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you could get yourself into a mess of trouble.
