View Full Version : INSANE amount of exhaust
I just bough a new OS 91sz pumped and being in break in usually means know running your engine rich which means that you get a lot of exhaust. The problem is that i fly my break in period in the backyard since i never get to be at the field and on the light wind days the exhaust sticks around and when i really look around i realize there is just too much and i wont be able to fly behind the house anymore since someone is eventually going to complain.
Is it normal to have so much exhaust that you lose visibility in a 100x50 foot area?

yes :)
I do this in my back yard all the time and I am surrounded by trees...so the smoke sorta gets trapped. I also fly in my culdesac (houses are way off the road) that is at the bottom of a hill. My neighbor was laughing when he came home the other day. He said he knew I was flying cause he could see a smokey haze as he crested the hill. But yes, it can get so thick you can cut it with a knife if there isn't a good breeze or anywhere for it to go.
So its not horribly abnormal?
I would like to lean it out a bit except the motor is already hot.

Well, tuning is difinitely an acquired skill. If you run it too rich, you will prolong the life of the motor, but will kill your glow plugs. Run it too lean, and you shorten the life and kill your glowplug. You need to get it just right, but always err on the side of rich. A little too rich won't hurt a thing, you will just have a little less power.
A lot too rich and you get vibrations, inconsistent runs, and a lot of smoke. But even once you do get it right...if you are running 30% heli fuel, it's still going to smoke a lot.
Does it pass the 3 second test? Can you place your finger on the back plate for 3 seconds without it burning your finger off? If so, then it's not too hot. But don't lean it out until you get 3-4 tanks thru it. Just let it slobber.

The fuel you use will also affect how much smoke you get. Magnum is like a fog machine, where as wildcat smokes a lot less. What fuel do you run?

Do you have any experience with Cool Power 30% Heli fuel as compared to the Wildcat? The Cool Power smokes like a fog machine! :)

Cool Power smokes more than Wildcat, but less than Magnum. You will notice it a lot less at the field. Open spaces naturally have a breeze on most days and take the smoke away. Its only in enclosed spaces and windless days that the difference between Cool Power and Wildcat is so noticable.

Internet has been out for a few days so heres the most recent news
Neighbors called police complaining about the smoke
I took a few flights just to get gas through the motor. Its wildcat 30% (what my LHS sells.
The needles have not been moved by my hands but when i checked it the other day they seemed to have moved in an entire turn?
Worst news is that i have suspicions that i seized/burnt out the engine. Its been extremely hot and iv got about 10 flights on it in a reasonably short time. It got extremely lean all of a sudden and quit. it has good gas flow, the needles are correct, have a hot plug but i just cant get it to start now.
Getting a little frustrated with this engine that is supposed to be the best of the best.

Are you sure there aren't any loose bolts or a loose carb on the engine?
They seem to be tight
i got the engine running again but just for a brief moment because i used the remaining gas i had to figure out the starting issue.
No news on the exhaust issue until i get new fuel!
