I installed the Trex 600 Tail hub and the diameter is just a little larger. if there is anything on the ground like a small stone it will hit the tail blades.

I have moved the stock fin down a little but was thinking about getting a trex fin....

has anyone done anything different?

I also have a pair of stock neon orange landing gear (no pipes) if anyone wants them PM me they are yours for the cost of postage. Helidirect refunded my money and told me to keep them.

I'm using the trex gear...

Hey Mike

I am running quite a mixture on my heli

I have the Raptor landing gear which rasies the heli quite considerably

I have raptor hub and blade grips

I have the Rex 600 carbon tail blades

and i also have the rex 600 fin set

JB is now running Raptor landing gear and complete rex 600 tail including fins

ground clearance is not a problem we have about 10-15mm under the rex tail fin

I also made sure that the boom was raised as far as it could go in the standard boom clamps.

will try and post a pic later on tonight my time

Ben

Wooohooo, yeh, post pictures!!! Even I haven't seen the mods on my Hurri!! What a guy Wazzer is, here I am miserable in the UK (missing my life in Borneo!) and there he is adding mods to my bird! Thanks mate

So does the T-Rex 600 tail fin help keep the 550's butt off the ground and thereby keep the blades from hitting?

I'll have the 600's landing gear on my 550 but I'll be upgrading the rear end at some point and want to know what I'm getting into of course. What diameter and type of tail rotor blades are you all using?

Happy Flying!

Hey Drew, see pics below for ground clearance with Raptor 30 skids and Rex 600 tail fin. That is the stock tail blades and gearbox shown there but you wil notice there is loads of ground clearance

Actually Bob

I have made a few adjustments and we now have more like 50mm or 2 inches of clearance under the Tail fin.

These pics are of my Hurry with plastic frame and Raptor landing gear (plus new high vis blades!)

But its the same on the carbon framed Hurry with Raptor landing gear

the close up of the tail shows standard Gaui gear box with Raptor hub and grips with Rex 600 carbon blades

hope this make it a bit more clear

Wazzer...

What really is inportant is the amount of clearance you have when the fin is on the ground.....

I was recently out flying with a brand new pair of tail blades....and it was a kind of rocky surface.....and several times when I touched down a rock got between the blade tips and dinged the blade.

I'm going to get a set of Trx fins as I'm sure they will have more clearance since the trex blade diameter is larger anyway...

We might as well rename these these birds from gaui to Gexx....

I hope someone at gaui reads these and maybe makes some changes in the future....but I guess we like to always tinker and change a good thing anyway.

I see what you mean

The tail fin extends about 10-15mm beyond the Rex 600 tail blades

best just fly on nice smooth open sandy beach like us then no fear of small stones!:)

it would be nice if Gaui gave the hurricane landing gear that was as wide as the Trex or Raptor... don't know what they were thinking when they gave it the little gear to land a big heli on... of course if they don't.. no big deal, we know how to fix it :D

Absolutley! always need to put our own style into things and Tinkering / Modding is in a heli builders nature.

but think of the sand wearing away on the tail fins... eating the gear train... best if you had solid ground and grass... time to leave the beach Ben....

your all just Jealous!!

bit of extra maintenance with a paint brush to dust off the sand never hurt anyone

benefits far out way the drawback if you ask me.

besides...not many large open grassy fields to fly on round here just mountains and beaches!!

mysticmead

guess you need to move then :D

seriously.. I'd love to fly on the beach all the time like you and Bob..but it isn't in the cards for me... so I'll stick to the grass soccer fields..

So is that the assembly you get? What other parts do you need to 'complete' the setup?

http://www.readyheli.com/H60044_Tail_Rotor_Control_Arm_p/h60044.htm

http://www.readyheli.com/H60077_1_Metal_Tail_Pitch_Assembly_TREX_600_p/h60077-1.htm

What else? Any issues with the gear ratios (same number of teeth on Align Tail assembly)??

naaaa... all you need to upgrade the tail is this.. http://www.readyheli.com/H60109_New_Tail_Rotor_Holder_p/h60109.htm direct drop in part.

Those parts would do the trick very nicely but dont forget the Tail rotor holder that Mystic pointed out.

There are several reason for this tail upgrade.

Many people have found that the stock Gaui tail case is actually quite week and upgrade to the Trex 600 case

The main reason is that at high head speeds the tail grips lock up due to the load on them. The tail hub and grips that Mystic pointed out are much better design and have thrust bearings in them to help with this problem. This is all you need really but the rest of it will be very nice to have.

Also the Trex Alloy gearbox looks very cool!!

If you go that route there area couple things to look out for.
The Gaui Boom is smaller diameter to the Trex 600 and also a bit longer.

So you can trim down the Gaui boom, Cut a slot in the off cut and use this as a shim around the Gaui boom for the Trex gearbox to fit on.
OR like me use a bit of heat shrink tubing over the end of the Gaui boom then fit the Trex box over that.

what i did was i put the spacer in the back skid and i also added a lock nut so its like i have 2 spacers in the back and it makes the tail sit up way high

How much do you have to trim off the stock booms? 2-3 mm or something?

Thanks for the info, just planning out my next moves...

Here are the upgrade parts I used in my TR setup.

204640 CNC Tail Pitch Slider Set Gaui Hurricane 550 (http://www.readyheli.com/204640_CNC_Tail_Pitch_Slider_Set_Gaui_Hurricane_55 _p/204640.htm)
204650 CNC Tail Rotor Grips with Thrust Bearings Gaui Hurricane 550 (http://www.readyheli.com/204650_CNC_Tail_Rotor_Grips_with_Thrust_Bearings_G _p/204650.htm)
CNC Aluminum Tail Case Set - HDX550/Hurricane 550 (http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=30_321_322&products_id=5889)
CNC Aluminum Tail Pitch Control Arm - HDX550/Hurricane 550 (http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=30_321_322&products_id=5890)

Works great!

I thought people were having problems with the Gaui tail and rotor grips? The CNC unit from Helidirect looks like a winner, inexpensive too! Why not use all the Helidirect parts together that 'belong' to this set versus using the more expensive Gaui parts?

Problems only start when you get your headspeed up above 2,000 or so

There is a problem with the centre hub of the HDX CNC tail

As mentioned....the hub had a problem and was shearing off. The tail case and slider work great I have the complete tail using it with the trex 600 hub....great combination.

I have also been using the Gaui tail hub with thrust bearings and have had no problem with that either.

Just make sure if you buy the helidirect meatl tail case.....you MUST use their tail lever, the gaui wont work.

For the money the tail case is a great deal....I have noticed my plastic one is starting to have soem movement in the bearings...and that will translate to vibrations sooner or later.

Well I suspect at some point I'll be pushing above 2000 rpm (though it's likely to be a while), so if that's the case is the T-Rex 600 rear end the way to go? Still not horribly expensive, hell I think I paid more for my T-Rex 450 metal tail then the 600 costs!

mysticmead
06-26-2008, 12:20 PM
if you go over 2000 rpm and get the tail kick... then all that's really needed is the part I posted a link too.. no more tail kick.. a $16 fix. the CNC tail case is nice.. but not needed

Drew816

Right on, I need to head over to my LHS for some parts anyway so I'll pick one up. AND if I decide to get more stuffs later I've only invested $16.

Can you use this T-Rex part with the HDX part do you know, that might be the ultimate cheapies combo kit if they all work together...
