View Full Version : Tail still stepping out :( Help?

My tail still steps out even after a fresh rebuild and a few tweaks.
I'm running a Spartan DS760 with a Futaba S3153. I have made my own carbon push rod which is solid and just under 3mm thick so I'm pretty confident it can handle the rotor torque.
The tail will step out when I punch out on the collective, it will goto the right then come back ( if I'm lucky ). It is otherwise pretty locked in.
Using 3S with a 15/9t currently until my Z-Power 3300kv comes. I run a 7 point curve on the throttle and linear pitch.
TC: 80 - 77.5 - 76 - 75 - 76 - 77.5 - 80
Any other ideas to what could be causing this?
My spec:
Gaui 200 with SD
Hitec HS45s
Spartan DS760 + Futaba S3153
AR6100 ( used with DSX9 )
Flight Power EvoLite V2 3S 800mah packs

There's several things that could cause this. I'd run a higher headspeed to start. I'd also check the pitch, make sure it's not above -/+ 12. Also check the tail rotor pitch and make sure your getting the maximum throw or travel without bindind. Check the balt or gears depending on the type of tail you have for a loose belt or gears. All in all I think we need bigger tail rotor blades for the 200.

I agree we need bigger blades but the small ones already penetrate past the vertical tail fin as it is. Doesnt take much to bump the blades on the ground.

I had the 3153mg servo on the tail, and IMHO, it performed poorly. http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=72594

I think wider tail blades not taller would help a lot of people. That way they wouldn't be more prone ti hit the ground. Just more surface area.

Good point.

Hi Jerome,
what are your settings on the Spartan? Do you have the USB cable?

I'm having the same issue on my belt drive. Brand new, less than 20 flights Gaui 200. 401 gyro, s3154 tail servo, gain is around....82. Pitch, last time I checked was 11+/-10 on woodies. Headspeed is screaming on my 2s stock motor setup. Brand new thunder power battery, 100% throttle across the board in idle up 2. When I drop it from say 30' to 10' and punch full positive, the tail will jolt 90 degrees or so to the right, and require correction. No binding, not much more than the usual bogging. The tail kinda jitters back and forth now, and I'm wondering if it needs a new tail belt. I know its not the delay on my gyro because I have it at 0 with this servo, unless you guys advise otherwise.

not sure if this is the problem, but have been posted here several times... check the tail cf plates bearing holes. Bearings can get loose and grind the cf hole, causing tail kicking issues and just general not holding problems. So look at the bearings in the tail, make sure the shaft isn't loose.

belt drive make sure belt is tight
torque drive check gear alignment
headspeed is my first point of inspection then be sure your limits are set to max.
also are you guys flying in normal mode to check if it holds well there? if it is not holding in a hover in normal even a spartan will have trouble holding in full power climb outs.
on your pitch curve if your pitch is faster than your throttle curve that will cause this also- can be seen by 90* swing and after the head speed cathes up is goes back on its own.

Thats not the issue, neither is headspeed. I think my problem is these little plastic tail blades have no pop in order to keep the tail where its supposed to be. Any suggestions on new blades?

I'm not sure if this will help but it's something else to check if nothing else has worked. Yesterday I spent a couple hours chasing a sloppy tail. Sudden pitch changes would push the tail out considerably. It had not done that prior to my last crash/repair. I checked all the normal things for slop and bendage, new stronger tail servo horn, beefed up the pushrod, raised the headspeed, etc.
What finally fixed it was replacing the plastic belcrank that fits over the tail slider ball. The link on the bellcrank would push off the ball slightly, toward the skinny neck of the ball, not on the neck but very slightly off the center of the ball. It was so close to normal that just looking at it didn't raise any concern. Any movement or pressure on the ball/link would cause the link to move further off the ball then it would spring back to almost centered on the ball when the load was removed. It drove me nuts for a couple of hours. I guess it had just worn down or the last crash caused the link to ride a little higher than normal. In any case, good luck with it.
I recently removed some weight (lighter canopy and lighter gyro) and raised the headspeed with the zpower motor and the tail improved a bunch. Prior to that I was looking for some larger tail blades too but now it's pretty decent. Now she'll run around backwards at a pretty good clip without blowing the tail out. Before even when it wasn't blowing out it felt like it easily could any second.

i used a micro heli tail slider to replace the stock one.

On that note, although pricey the Spartan 760 will be a huge help in tail control. If you don't have one, do yourself and your heli a favor and get one.

i might if i could find one. later on down the road when i build my "big" heli.
