View Full Version : Freya electronics-help for ignorant dummy!

I've been researching various electronics options for my Freya but the sheer variety of choices has my head spinning. And not in a good way. More like a Linda Blair-possessed-by-the-devil kind of way.
I've decided on servos (Futaba 9452) and gyro. (Gy611) For throttle I'm considering the S3151-if you think .18 sec transit time is fast enough. (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=000119871&I=LXFKZ8&P=K) My trouble is the Rx and how to power it, and what to do about a governor. I'll be using my DX7 so here's what I've come up with so far.

1. Use the new AR7100R with built in governor. There's some question as to whether or not it will work on the pumped OS .91 but apparently with some modification it can be made to fit. As the 7100R passes rx pack voltage straight through, that means I'd also need some sort of regulator. Price wise, it looks like the Castle BEC (http://www.readyheli.com/Castle_Creations_CC_BEC_10_Amp_Switching_Regulator _p/csem0005.htm) is the one to beat. Obviously the 10 amp Spektrum unit or the Fromeco could work, but those are very large (and pricey)
Going this route would mean purchasing a Rx lipo and some sort of cutoff device or battey monitor like the Voltwatch.

2. Use standard AR7000 with a separate governor such as the Multigov or Futaba GV-1. (Rated for up to .60 size heli's, not sure if it's appropriate for a .90) Again go with the Castle BEC and separate lipo/battery monitor, or assemble a Rx pack from good old nimh's and eliminate the bec altogether.

The reason I'm asking is because I have not built the bird yet and I just don't know how much space is available, if any, for all these gadgets.

3. Then there's the starting issue. Seems remote glow adaptors are popular, but it looks like Align's 2 in 1 (http://www.readyheli.com/HE50H11_1_B6T_2_In_1_Voltage_Regulator_Combo_TREX_ p/he50h11-1.htm) might be useful as not only will it heat the plug but it regulates voltage to the RX as well. Frankly I don't see how an alligator clip is going to stay attached to the plug but there's probably some way to secure it. Obviously I could go this route with either the 7000 or 7100R.

The goal here is the most efficient, cleanest setup available for the space provided on the helicopter. I'd really appreciate your comments/help with this.
Thanks!

Just to give you an insight of what I'm using on my Freya Evo 90, here's the specs of the electronics that I'm using. You don't have take my word for it, but this is just to give you some ideas.

Cylic servos: (3) Futaba BLS-451
Throttle servo: (1) Futaba S9452
Gyro: Futaba GY611 with BLS-251 servo for rudder control
Engine: O.S. 91SZ Pumped
Electronic Regulator: Align2-in-1 Regulator with glow plug
Muffler: Curits Youngblood Muscle Pipe 5 (90)
Governor: Futaba GV-1
Receiver: Spektrum AR7000
Receiver Battery: Flight Power 2s @ 2170 mAh.

I also added a Thunder Tiger header tank on the side for security sake and using two fuel line filters.

I'll soon add a carb smart and using a Hitec servo for mixture control.

As for the Align 2-in-1 regulator with glow plug, I did a bit of modification to it by cutting out the alligator clip and replaced it with the C-clip (the clips that are used to hold the lexan bodies to the RC car chassis) soldered that to the wire. I attach that C-clip to the glow plug and that thing is secure and tight/snug. The only way that thing is coming off is by pulling it out with your own hands. Otherwise that thing ain't gonna come out.

Good luck with your choices.

And remember that a .60 and .90 are the same size bird.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help!
Based on your list I'm going to assume there's plenty of space for mounting everything?
Curious about the header tank.....I thought the whole reason behind a pumped motor was a steady fuel supply?
I was considering the bls-451 as well but have had such good luck with the 9451's, plus I'm a cheap S.O.B.:YeaBaby:
On that note, is something like the 9452 necessary on throttle?

The header tank is by personal preference. If you are running a OS 91SZ pump and just want to have the main fuel tank (600cc) then that's fine too. I just want to have a header tank just for personal reasons.

Now regarding the 9452, again this is just my personal reason and preference. You can run whatever servos you want. There are several cheap torque servos around.

If you are going to get the Spekturm AR7100 with Rev limiter...GO FOR IT! I've heard good things about that receiver. Even Bob Finless himself liked the new receiver. It takes out the pain of configuring an extra piece of electrionics like the Futaba GV-1. I myself is going that route later on. Since I already have the GV-a I'll make full use of it before I get the AR7100.

Bottomline is you want to build this Freya out of your own linking and preference. The other's set up including myself might not work for you. You want to find a set up that will work for you and find it comfortable to work with. Good Luck.

Thanks 2kwik2c!
Sorry about all the stupid questions but it's my first nitro bird and as it's a considerable investment I'd like to get it right the first time. I'll probably go with the new Rx once it's known if mounting the sensor is going to be an issue on the OS motor or not.
Otherwise it looks like there's just a few little minor details I need to work out, and once I sell off an organ or two I should be able to pick up the rest of the parts I'll need.:D

BTW, I saw your build thread-Awesome job!
Have you been able to finish it yet?

The AR7100 with the Rev Limiter option is going to work on O.S. 91SZ engines. As for the pumped version of the O.S., you'll need to modify the back part of it in order to fit the sensor since the pump is located in there. You also might want to consider getting the Y.S. 91 SR long stroke. I heard it has good power like the O.S. and it's relieable and easy to tune. My next nitro bird will also be a Hirobo. I'm currently saving up my money and see if I could buy the new Turbulence D3 or another Freya with the SWM option and the new head. But this time around I'll use the Y.S.

As for my Freya Evo 90, I'm getting close to finishing it. I've been pretty busy with other things lately that I haven't able to update my thread in Hirobo World. I'm just waiting for my Carb smart to arrive and after some tweaking, on with the maiden flight. I'll see if my wife would like to volunteer to shoot some pictures and video.
