I guess these things happen.
I've been flying (and by flying I mean hovering) my 450SE v2 for the past two weeks. I was getting really confident with tail in and both side hovering, even nose in was starting to come together. The last few flights i've decided to try a few slow basic circuits, I was getting a little to cocky and today some how the bird got more sideways than i was used to. It ended bad...
I know for sure the landing struts and skids are toast, blades crumpled, main gear looks like it could use replacing, tail boom looks like it may have a slight bend.
Oddly enough the fly bar looks to be ok. I plan to replace anyway but I would have assumed that bad boy should have curled like a pretzel. Anyone else have a flybar survive a crash?

Occasionally, but not very often. Many times it only gets a slight bend in it, which I just straighten. However, after two or three slight bends I typically replace the flybar.

i just had one of the worst crashes ever, and the flybar was the only thing that survived! i replaced frames/skids/pipes/blades/main/feather/battery tray. but NO flybar.

I guess there is no ryhm or reason to heli crashes.
The thing that has stuck with me most is the horrible sound it made as it impacted the ground. That sound can not be recreated in a sim. It may give me nightmares tonight

I'm not sure if it's the sound of it hitting or the immediate silence that disturbs me more. There is a definite type of "thump" when it hits the ground, though.

My first TREX crash:
I had been flying a Honeybee FP for about 3 months and a CP for about a month. I knew how to fly more or less.
I got the TREX in a hover about 5' up and the tail kinda went left about 15 degrees. I got scared and gave full negative collective. This was the second flight on my brand new TREX. I lost boom, skids, everything in the head, most of the tail, battery, and ESC.

OUCH!
Glad to see the crash didn't discourage you in the hobby. I knew a crash was coming, I just assumed since I was playing it "safe" it wouldn't happen for a while.
I ordered the replacement parts this weekend. The great part is most of the replacement parts come in "multi packs" two tailbooms, four skids, three main gears, so on and so on. Now my next crash should be covered :)

Did you come down on pavement? I can't imagine that much damage on grass.

It was really bad. On grass. From 2000+ RPM, full negative from hover is a bad thing. A very bad thing.

I've learned that if I feel trouble...jam it into the air to get enough space to recover. I was doing left and right hovering when my 1st gyro went out and she came around on me. Jammed it to about 30 feet up and was able to turn it to tail in long enough to get it down safely. Works so far.

Agreed, I think this would have helped me in my crash. Had I pushed full collective up, the bird most likely would have gone up and away from terra firma at a 45 degree angle. It woulda been sketchy but it woulda put me in a position to try and recover, rather than on the ground doing the funky chicken.
I ride dirt bikes, and the rule of thumb is to grab a wrist full of throttle any time you feel the bike getting squirley under you, gonna apply that little gem to RC helis too.
