How do I tell if my main gear is mod .5 or mod .7?

mod .7 has 153 teeth
mod .5 has 212 teeth

So counting teeth is the only way to tell? There is no code on the gear or something?

I don't remember seeing any part numbers on the gear. Just count a 1/4 the way around and multiple by 4. The numbers will be different enough between the two gears that you can't miss.

So when I went to open the package to count teeth, I discovered that it actually comes with both.
So why would you use one over the other?

Originally the mod .5 was designed for the L500, and the mod .7 for the L600. The larger, deeper teeth of the mod .7 mean the gear can withstand more power being put through it, particularly suitable for 10S L600 setups.
Then guys started putting super high power systems in the L500 and stripped some gears, so they included both to give you the choice.
The advantage of the mod .5 gear is the finer teeth will have more teeth contacting the pinion at any one time, and they apparently run quieter.
When I got my 500, it only had the mod .5 in it, and I have 100 or so flights on that with no hint of stripping or any other problems. There are others on here who have used both who may be able to offer more advice.

I just went the .7mod, if you get a 600 at least you only have 1 type of pinion to get if you get a few to begin with!
