i was flying my raptor 90 today here is where it goes bad, i landed to check where my kids where and just touched the tailblades, took back off in idle 2 with the govener engaged at 1950 rpms then e heard somthing didnt sound right so i was setting down when the tail stoped and instant piro.
then i hit the kill swithc and nothing. here she goes in a slow climb tail spinning like crazy and the radio not working. i rebooted the tx(14mz on 2.4) and still nothing. needless to say all i could do was watch for a crash but i didnt happen and over the hill it went witn no idea where it went. all i can think is the battery came unpluged (lipoly and scott grey regulator with deans connector)
so i dont have any clue because i dont have any idea where the heli went in the woods or into the swamp or how far it went. it just sucks loosing such a nice heli.

Oh dude I know and feel the pain. I just completely trashed my 90 3D yesterday. Even though I found it, I wished I hadn't. Have a look at he carnage...

Oh well my brother, we will live to fly another day. Good luck to you and sorry about your loss.:bawl

Wow that sucks. I haven't lost a heli, but I've spent hours searching for planes in the woods, so I know the pain.

Wow I thought losing a heli was just a myth. They always tend to come down not too far away.

That really does suck. Sorry for you loss bet you had at least $1500 in that heli.

found it about 1/2 mila away, pure luck i parked the truck and it was 40 feet away in a tree 10 feet up. i was looking down but there it was.
the tail is striped so that is the first problem. the battery was next to the heli and when i pluged it in the rx was still bound to my tx.
there is a strange melted spot on canopy and the throttle servo is vide open and there is clutch dust on the baseplate.
i guess its my lucky day! crashing sucks and where it went in you can walk over it and miss it and if its in a tree you wont see it the canopy is to thick this time of year.
my best guess is when it started to piro fast the battery came unpluged

Yay for the perverse happy ending. It sucks to crash but it sucks more to lose a heli. Glad you came off with the lighter of the two charges.

The damage doesn't look too bad at all considering.

at least nobody got hurt. except my wallet

ok as i can tell the setscrew on the taildrive gear loosened i did have it locktited and the pin came out setting in motion the piroette whitch caused the battery to come unpluged. the you can guess. it is hard to see that a heli can run half+ a tank of fuel and be as stable as it was when i sometimes have a hard time just hovering.
all is a learning experence for me allbeit a scary one.
every time you fly a heli or airplane remember that any little part can fail and no telling what will happen.this was to say the least the cheapest part on the heli that could have failed and yet caused total loss. at least all came out ok.

You must have had one heck of a well trimmed and balanced heli. All 4 tails I've seen let go that resulted in mad piro looked like rainbows on PCP. I've never seen one just climb away straight!

Now, about that tail drive system. You need to install the brass ring or heat shrink fix to keep the pin from EVER doing this again! Make sure you do both ends of the drive train (two pins up front, and one back in the tail housing) Also, if you battery came out from a fast piro, you should strongly re-evaluate your battery retention system!

Also, put a longer bolt in the elevator control arm where it goes thru the collective pivot bearing. I've seen two of those come unscrewed in flight and end in an equally unhappy manner...

However, congrats on finding your heli and not injuring anyone or damaging someonelse's property!

I just crashed my R90 3D today due to loss of tail and uncontrolled piro. I think what caused it was the lower bearing block slid forward causing the gear right behind the autorotation gear to strip. The autorotation gear is currently wedged against the clutch bell. Minimal damage to the heli so I doubt this happened in the crash, but I don't see how it hapened because the top bearing block would have to have moved also to allow it and I know I had all 4 bolts tight. Imediately prior to the crash I did a piro to the left, then a piro to the right. Unless the piro to the right (oposite the torque) put to much stress on this area, I don't know.

any way, take a look at your heli in this area and maybe it did the same thing.

i couldnt belive how stable this thing was. it had a small drift until the wind took it away over the hill. i think that there was enough turbulance at the top of the hill to upset it enough to take it down.
i will take all tips when i rebuild this and i guess i need to take my 60 apart also to fix the tail. i tested the battery and there was just about a half inch from where the wires were tight and the front of the canopy so it did come unpluged so i will change the way i have the batteries on all my helis.
i wash i had the video camera for this one. it took so long for this to go behind the hill just the helpless feeling of watching and not being able to do a single thing.

Sorry to here about you 90 Vandelescrow. Seems like I've started a trend. I better quit posting, I may be bringing you guys bad luck. I don't see how the upper or lower B-blocks could move enough to cause that. On mine, they had virtually zero play, and you would think both would have to move for that to happen. Just a thought, but maybe some sort of debris, or a bug got cought in the gear mesh. It doesn't take much to cause a lock up at those rates of speed. I know it sounds crazy, but as I'm finding out, anything in this hobby is possibe. Hope you get her back flying soon. :thinking

Mike,

Just to keep the thread rolling, my main power wire decided to come apart at the Deans connector. The result was a rapid piro, and sudden deceleration when it hit Terra firma..

I knew I was in trouble when I hit throttle hold and nothing happened.. Fortunately the fuel tank was ejected on impact and kept the bird from doing the funky chicken...

Maybe its time for me to consider redundant power supplies..

Here's a picture of the culprit:

Ouch!! How bad was the damage? From the picture it doesn't look to bad, although I can't see much of the heli. I'll bet you didn't beat me as far as carnage goes. :) You know this hobby is alot like golf, we have a few great flights (shots) that keep us comming back, and then there are times you just want to say...:BSS

$289 in parts + the Kasama Head :-( Worse part is I destroyed my black canopy....

The good news is all the parts are here as of today.

BTW, the funds are on the way to you via snail mail..
