I am new to the hobby and new to this site so please bear with me if I don't properly explain my problems. I just bought and built a 550. I followed the build instructions and watched Bob's videos. I am using the stock ESC and motor and a Castle BEC and either Tenergy 2200 or 3300 batteries ( i have tried both). I also followed the ESC setup instructions in the manual. Here are the problems that I am having:

1. I am having random spool up issues. Sometimes the motor with spin up with a small amount of stick and the next time I have to go 1/4 or more to get the motor to start spinning up. My pitch is 35 40 45 70 90 and throttle is 0 65 70 75 100. Also, at one point I lowered the throttle while hovering and when I applied more throttle nothing happened. I also noticed that my batteries get very warm after only a few minutes of time.

Fyi, I also have built and fly (try to) a T-rex 450.

2. Second problem, something seems to be binding or this is related to the problem above. I give it stick and WHAM all of a sudden it's like something came "unstuck" and the heli will just shoot up (canopy is off and I already cut a grove in the canopy to avoid the ball hitting).

3. The tail sometimes will jerk to the left. Again this may be related to problem one but I have checked the gyro (Futaba 401) gain and it is fairly low.

I have already gone through the all the ball links and sized them if needed so I don't think anything is binding. I have checked the motor alignment and set the correct gear spacing and checked all my wiring to make sure nothing was loose. I am lost and am hoping someone out there can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Mike

STOP....... read rest of this thread http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=79132&page=3
i figure your running a rx pack which is the only reason you haven't fried your esc.....

No, I am not running a receiver pack. I am still a little confused by the thread you pointed me to. On my setup, I left the middle (red) wire in the esc connector because the heli would not fire up without it. Are you telling me that my current configuration may fry my ESC. It's all making sense now, the heat, the throttle problems, etc.

What should I do to fix the problem? I really don't want to run a receiver pack right now.

Thanks a bunch for you reply. It's appreciated.

Wondering... I plugged the BEC into the bottom connector of my dx7 receiver. Is this incorrect?

bro as i understand it(unfortunately using the destructive test method with someone else's gear) the gaui esc and the castle bec are not compatible. there is a large red warning in castle's online instructions saying do not power esc from bec it will destroy your esc.so far you've been ****ing lucky.....you are going to have to get another esc or bec an rx pack won't help at the mo....

a voltage regulator and rx pack would work.. it doesn't add that much extra weight to the hurri... or as kahn said..a different ESC.. the Align 75a works well with the CC bec and costs $80 at grandrc.com http://grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/34355

ok. I get the Align ESC. When I get the ESC I am assuming that the correct way to wire this thing up is as follows:

1. Y Cable the batteries and get the power for the BEC.
2. Plug BEC into battery port on Receiver.
3. Plug ESC into Throttle on Receiver.

Is that correct?

Although if I get the Align ESC do I still need the BEC?

yes a BEC is still needed. and that should work for your wiring. just have to remember, ALL channels share the same power bus, so no matter where the power from the BEC is plugged in, all channels get the power they need.

I really appreciate your help. Good thing I didn't fry anything. Thanks again for the quick responses.

after what happened with andrew and then a couple of hours later reading mikes(what is it with you mikes how many bloody mikes do ya need  ) and considering castle do say that their bec is compatible with every esc on the market i sent them a email telling them about this. they seem to give a shit and have a sense of humor - and have a couple of specific warnings of other gear imcompatibsomething on their pdf.....who knows they might include a warning on their online instructions.hey i don't do guilt very well o.k.
