I found a great build link for the 500D very nice pictures and explanations.

I don't know how to give this guy credit, because I don't remember how I found this, but it's worth taking a look.

The one comment I will make, since it states there are (2) star shaped spacers, the one with the larger I.D. hole goes on the tail case. The smaller I.D. goes on the boom.
Maybe this should be a sticky also

I agree, excellent walkthrough.

Ok, I built this following many of the suggestions in the build above. But, here are some things I did differently. Thanks to Black Titanium for the pictures and links to the mod for the 9650. Still working out some bugs, got a bad vibration, guess I will have to take it apart AGAIN !
First, I added some support to my blocks by using epoxy to mount cross pieces.

Here's the mod to run the 9650 under the boom

Then I used the Horizonal Stabilizer / boom support bracket to support the linkage rod down the boom. I used two.

The two star shaped spacers, one with large hole and one with small hole. The large hole goes on the tail case and the small hole fits on the boom.

And lastly, I have seen alot of people talking about the windows. I used fiberglass screen, double layered and CA'd inside the fuselage around the edges. EDIT: I took out one layer of screen, it was getting too hot. and one layer still makes it look like it's got windows.

Hey Chas, how's it going? Listen, I'm just finishing up this exact fuse and I don't know if you saw my other post, but I'm having a problem where my star washers appear to be about 1/8" too small and the boom slops around inside the FG tail. Did you have this problem?

Yep, about a 1/8" which I used foam around the boom. I think it shows that in another thread. At first I left it alone, because it gave room for the linkage rod to slide on the body. I did not cut or trim anything around the tail case on the fuse. You could use just a drop of CA on one or two of the posts on the star, to hold it on the fuse, but I think the flexability is better.

Whew! Now I feel better. I used some dense but soft adhesive foam and it holds perfectly.
Thanks Chas!

LOL.... yeah, I was real curious at first too, like WTH did I do wrong, something not fitting right here, but all is well. Post pics when you're done.

Here's a quick shot of the bird, nothin special, another N23CP! She has two strobes, a red in the belly and a white on the tail which aren't visible, and a front landing light that's really bright. One interesting feature I added was to make a j connector with a 2 inch length of wire going to a SPST switch, in case I need to re-bind, I just flip the switch! It's very hard to get to the rx once the mechanics are inside the fuse!

Looks great, but you gotta do something with those rudder blades, that yellow just clashes, and I would probably put CF mains on there too.

Actually I was planning to do the same stripe job as my silver 450 in this pic, just haven't had the time. I kinda like the blue fiber blades since they match. I will get CF's though. I'm also gonna try the 335's you see on this picture on the scale bird, it tames it even more for a more scale-like flight. Thanks bro!

Thanks for the credit guys
Good point about the 2nd "star" wood thingy. Never thought of that ! just shows eh . Learn something every day.
Apologies if the link to my build log doesn;t work for some. It's up 99% of the time but is hosted by me at home and so subject to girlfriend/ cleaning lady unplugging the server :)
I'd like to say my "wooden stack" mod will stop all vibration. All i know is my MD 500 doesn;t vibrate.
I can easily understand those that do though. If you consider such a thin skin scale fuse is only attached at 3 points ( 2 of which in the same plane) it's easy to contemplate how the scale fuse amplifies any vibration in the heli mechanics.
Cheers

You did a great job on that, hope you don't mind me posting a link.

no problem at all! Glad it has helped others.
I made it for a couple of mates in the UAE who work there on construction projects and don't have the time to mess around finding out the hard way. It's easier and quicker to help them out doing this than starting up endless emails and phone calls..
Just in case anybody, like me, has an early version of the heliartist that has screws to fix the front cabin to the fuse and wants to upgrade to magnets. The best i could find in my RC shop was Thunder Tiger Raptor neodym magnets.
AC1679 Magnet parts 8030
This is a pack of 4 . ( i believe they are used for timing or rev counter but i'm not sure)
PS how do you post pics in the post rather than an attachment ????
Cheers

I've many times been able to cut and paste them in, although not always.
BTW, thanks for posting the build log, it helped me out as well.

You post the attachment first, then after it loads, don't close the window. Right click on the file that loaded, and click properties. That will give you the URL of the attachment. Highlight the URL ie: http://www.helifreak.com and copy the url, then click on the little yellow icon with the mountain on it, to insert image, insert the url there, and there you go.

Chas, the way you describe is by pointing the post to the URL on the HF server, right? Could you not also point to a URL on your own PC or a website? Same thing, no? :)

Yep, I am not the image/video guru, but you can link it to another url, from another server or web site I think. Specifically, I never tried from my own computer, I have attached from the url in my photo album, and it's quicker to load if you attach the image.
So did you all use the wooden stars with foam or just foam? Thanks..sorry got confused.

Ended up with just the foam, albeit a pretty stiff foam. It's pretty solid now.

You can use either or both. If you use the foam, just make sure it does not interfere with the rudder linkage rod, usually cut a v-slot in the foam to point downward.
ok cool. I'll just keep the foam in. I wasn't sure if there was any benefit to having the wooden stars in. Thanks

I can't see any benefit in mine since it doesn't reach the sides! I was thinking of making a new one, but the foam holds it pretty well. Although a new larger one cut from aircraft plywood would be the right way to fix it. The foam is pushing mine towards one side, the star would center it nicely. Maybe I'll get un-lazy and make one!
