Hey guys,
I am working on my uncles bird, a B400. This thing was so far out of adjustment, it wasn't even flyable! After spending some time on it, leveling servo horns, swash, washout, head, and setting up his tail in rate mode, she can once again fly!
BUT the problem is in the tail. He has a ds285 servo for the tail rotor, when I give it rudder.. the tail jumps back and forth.
It doesn't wag in a hover or flight, just when I give rudder input.
I am wondering if it is the gyro, or the servo is too fast, especially with the soft plastic stock tail rotors.
Any suggestions? He got bored with the hobby not being able to fly it, so I need to get it set up sweet so we can go to the feild again!

My gyro gain is only about 67% so I don't think that is the wagging. I think it has to do with the speed of the servo maybe???

I feel so lonely in this thread... :bawl

i dont think speed is thr problem
my 3400g moves faster that the ds285
not sure why it does it on the ground but not in the air
check the rod may be bound up in the guides
i would sugest getting a tailrotor servo
but if it works for you now you should be ok till you really get in to the flying

Sokal, man your youtube vids really helped me when I first got my B400! Thanks for taking the time!
You've got a good point about the servo speed..
I guess what happend is my uncle (it's his bird) stripped out a cyclic servo so he took the one from the tail and got what he thought was a good tail servo. I told him the ds285 is a great servo for the cyclic but isn't a tail servo. But I assumed that it might not be the best servo for the tail, that it would get the job done.
So do you think that the ds288 is just not strong enough/too small?
Should the g110 gyro be set on standard or digital for the 285?

IT'S ALIVEEEE!!!! the thread that is..
I am still having a problem with this B400 though.. I took the DS285 servo off of the tail, and put a stock servo back on the tail.
I am running into the same problem. on the ground it's fine, but in the air, the tail bounces back and forth about 6". It's not a fast wag like too much gyro gain, but a slow back and forth. It does it in a hover, or especially when I give it any rudder input. I've got it set up in rate mode, the gyro gain for HH is 68%. :thinking
help! I've got to get her back in the air. any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanx!

Make sure that the switch setting on the gyro is on normal and not digital. Even though the stock servos are digital, the pulse rate from the gyro in digital mode is more than the stock servo can handle.

I agree with Sokal, get a servo that is rated for the TAIL and your troubles will be over.

My gyro troubles started out in a similar fashion. It started to wag whilst turning.
It would then go away..... I'd get a few flight everything was fine. Then it would come back..
Cheked the belt tension.... nope.... changed the gain.... nope..... changed the tail, tail servo. Everything was setup properly....
The wag got worse as time went on to the point where it was constanly wagging no matter what you set the gain to. Then eventually the gyro decided it was going to apply full left rudder without even spooling up.
So if you're using the standard gyro, it could be on its way out (time from my first problem to total failure was about a month).
Still deciding what to replace it with (whilst waiting for a replacement from horizon) .Leaning toward 401/9257 combo or a JR-770 3D / 8900g, for when I get something that deserves it :YeaBaby:.
