I bought a Scorpion Commander 55A ESC. This version is supposed to have a 4A BEC on it. Do I have to run a separate BEC or will this do the job. I am running the Z20 980kv motor. Thanks for any input.

most ESC that have a built in BEC as designed for use with a 3s.. a 6s would probably burn it up... so in this case, yes, you'd need a separate BEC..

Thanks for the input. Know any decent BEC's that would fit the bill?

well... that depends on if you want to run a rx pack or not... if you use an rx pack, the align BEC (really a voltage regulator) works great. if you don't want a rx pack, seems like most are running the Castle Creations BEC.. me personally I prefer using a rx pack.. but a lot of others don't...all up to what you want..

The Scorpion Commander is only designed for 4S lipo. If you are running 6S lipo, you need the 6 cell switching BEC series.
I just got a Scorpion 90A switching ESC and was not impressed. I couldn't get it programmed and then it failed the smoke test. I ended up going back to my CC85HV.

I'm only planning on running the 3S 2200x2 setup for now. Sounds like I should just run a more robust setup from the start and save myself the trouble of the upgrade down the line. I think I'll go with what you guys suggested and run the separate BEC and Rx battery. Thanks.

Just to throw in an alternative suggestion of the Dimension Engineering SportBEC - I have used one of these on my 550's for about 6 months with no problems

With the batts in series that still ends up being a 6S lipo. The Commander series of speed controls can't handle the voltage. The motors used on the 550 pretty much all need 6S to get the headspeed up where it needs to be.

Is there a noticable difference in flight time when using a separate Rx battery as opposed to running the BEC off the main batteries?

many have said no.. some have said that you get longer with a rx battery.. others have said you get longer with a BEC.. I would think that the little extra weight added or saved negates any difference in flight time.. if anything, you MIGHT get an extra couple seconds with a rx pack
